Primary objective
The Aboriginal Liaison Officer contributes to the provision of culturally appropriate health service provision to Aboriginal patients
and their families at the Alice Springs Hospital. This includes providing a relevant language service, cultural brokerage, advocacy
and support to Aboriginal patients and education and advice to our staff.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide a language service for identified Aboriginal patients and their families and staff.
2. Provide a cultural brokerage service to Aboriginal patients and their families to enable them to engage in health care decision
making.
3. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of patients accessing the Alice Springs Hospital.
4. Provide advice to health service providers on cultural factors influencing patient engagement and decision making.
- Assist in the training for hospital staff on communication and cross-cultural issues, appropriate in management and decision
making, with staff and Aboriginal patients and families.
6. Attend team meetings, training activities and supervision, contribute ideas and work collectively on team projects, and
participate in all activities the team engages in.
7. Work within a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse team to ensure provision of a culturally appropriate service.
8. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential:
1. Ability to speak and understand at least one Aboriginal language of Central Australia within a complex setting.
- Experience working as a cultural broker or liaison between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
- Good communication skills including verbal and written communication for documentation purposes and the ability to work
across diverse cultures in the workplace.
4. Understanding of cross-cultural issues that may impact on patients and staff within the health service.
5. Ability to organise and prioritise own workload to ensure essential tasks are completed within designated time frames.
6. Capacity and willingness to work towards developing identified own learning needs and complete training.
- Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
Desirable:
1. Ability to speak a Central Australian Aboriginal language.
2. Qualification in Interpreting or ability to gain.
