About the program

The Cell Visitor Program aims to ensure the safety and wellbeing of detainees in the Cairns Watch House. The Cairns Watch House is the largest in Queensland outside of Brisbane and has the capacity to hold 100 detainees at any given time. The purpose of the Cell Visitor Program initiative is to provide support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in police custody to reduce the incidence of suicide, self-injury and health impacts related to intoxication and incarceration.

To Be Successful You Will Need

  • Ability to maintain accurate records of client interactions and service provision.
  • Ability to work night shifts if required.
  • A high level of commitment to the values of Anglicare North Queensland.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations.
  • Prior experience working with people under the influence of alcohol and other drugs will be highly regarded.
  • Experience providing first aid will be highly regarded.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities will be highly regarded.
  • Experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds will be highly regarded.

Compliance

  • A current QLD drivers licence 'Class C' or interstate equivalent
  • Blue Card (Working with children card)
  • A current national Police Check (within the last 3 months)
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certifications
