As a Lawyer with the Commission's Professional Conduct team, you will assist in the performance of the Commission's functions under the Legal Profession Act 2007.
The role includes independent and collaborative work to support other lawyers, investigators, regulatory litigators and the Commissioner in discharging regulatory functions, and you will undertake a range of legal work, with key responsibilities requiring the ability to:
- communicate effectively with and manage the expectations and demands of a wide range of internal and external clients ranging from senior members of the legal profession, through to clients and other members of the public who may have a limited understanding of the legal system and processes
- assess and advise in relation to complaints about the conduct within the Commission's jurisdiction within performance criteria as set by the Commissioner
- assess, investigate and review complaints about the conduct of lawyers, law practice employees and unlawful operators, and recommend what action, if any, the Commissioner should take on those complaints
- identify apparent misconduct that is not subject to complaint and recommend that the Commissioner initiate investigation matters as appropriate
- discharge other duties as directed from time to time, including:
- assisting other teams of the Commission, including the Litigation team in relation to preparation of matters, when operationally required
- recommending improvements to the Commission's policies, procedures, work practices and management systems to enable the Commission to maintain high standards of service and to continually improve
- contributing to the Commission's project, research, policy and educational activities
You will:
- abide by the Australian Solicitor Conduct Rules (as amended from time to time) and display high standards of professional ethical conduct at all times, in addition to any other professional obligations
- be eligible for appointment as an investigator under the Legal Profession Act 2007 (any such appointment is at the Commissioner's discretion)
