The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Senior Accountant to join the team. The role will see you overseeing the financial operations of our growing business. The successful candidate will play a critical role in managing the finance team, driving change management and improving financial controls.

Work alongside all departments, particularly the Senior Leadership Team to provide financial information, tools, analysis and insights, challenge their thinking, and help them make more informed decisions and drive business strategy. Ensure accurate reporting across all facets of the business.

Experience with Xero and other ERP systems, coupled with a deep understanding of working capital and cash flow management, is essential.

Some key responsibilities include:

  • Team Leadership & People Management - Lead and mentor the finance team, promoting a collaborative and supportive culture. Oversee workload, welling being, performance and development of their team.

  • Change Management - Drive and support ongoing improvements in finance systems, processes and reporting frameworks, proactively adapting to changes and contributing to organisational transformation initiatives.

  • Industry-Specific Financial Management - Apply in depth expertise in building and construction industry accounting, including accurate project job costing, revenue recognition, and margin control, while effectively managing multi-trade costs and adhering to tight project timelines.

  • Budgeting and Forecasting - Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), ensuring that overhead cost planning supports revenue targets to achieve desired profit outcomes, and developing rolling forecasts and scenario models.

  • Financial Reporting - Prepare and present regular financial reports, analysing key trends and risks to inform strategic decisions, and ensuring timely and accurate financial closing processes.

  • Data Analysis and Modelling - Summarise and present financial data from multiple systems through dynamic tables and dashboards, assess financial performance to identify savings and efficiency opportunities, and deliver clear visual reports using advanced Excel features.

  • Working Capital & Cash Flow Management - Oversee and forecast cash flow to ensure sufficient working capital and meet operational needs across multiple projects

  • Accounts Receivable - Manage and coordinate invoicing and billing to ensure accuracy and promptness, aligning billing with project milestones, and proactively overseeing debtor collections to minimise outstanding payments.

  • Accounts Payable - Ensure all spending complies with approved company guidelines, maintaining positive vendor relationships and prompt payments, and tracking departmental and project expenditures against budgets

  • Payroll Oversight - Key payroll responsibilities include ensuring the accurate and prompt processing of payroll for all staff and contractors, monitoring leave, superannuation, and employee entitlements, and ensuring compliance with relevant awards, contracts, and Fair Work requirements.

  • Compliance & Taxation -Collaborate with external accountants on complex accounting matters and year-end reporting, managing BAS preparation with accurate GST coding, and ensuring full compliance with ATO obligations such as PAYG, superannuation, and income tax requirements.

  • Risk Management - Identify and minimise financial risks, ensuring compliance with financial regulations and reporting standards, and implementing robust financial policies and procedures to maintain effective control.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years experience in a similar role (within the building and construction industry, would be advantageous).
  • Proven leadership experience and ability to build strong, motivated teams.
  • Proficient in XERO Accounting Software (minimum requirement).
  • Experience with other ERP systems (e.g. Bizprak, Jobpac, or similar) highly regarded.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, complex formulas, charts, modelling).
  • Strong understanding of construction-specific financials including project-based accounting.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical mindset with an eye for detail and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field (mandatory).
  • CPA, CA or equivalent qualification (preferred).
  • Additional training in leadership, change management, or construction finance (advantageous).
