The Opportunity
We're offering a unique opportunity for an experienced and forward-thinking Maintenance Manager to lead the delivery of critical maintenance services across Wollongong's civil infrastructure, rock pools, fleet & plant mechanical, and metal fabrication teams. This is a pivotal leadership role, responsible for shaping the future of our city's essential assets and services.
Reporting to the Manager City Works, you will be responsible for the innovative and effective leadership of the Civil Maintenance portfolio. The role provides a unique opportunity to combine your leadership skills, maintenance knowledge and civil engineering experience to lead a large and diverse civil and mechanical maintenance team, supporting our infrastructure and planning teams to deliver excellent customer service.
This is a permanent full-time position.
Salary:
$141,077 up to $166,182 per annum plus superannuation and an option of a motor vehicle equalisation allowance ($10,779.60 pa) OR a lease for private use of a motor vehicle. A 3.5% Civil Liability allowance may also apply. (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications.)
How you'll make a difference
- Embed a safety-first culture across the maintenance and workshop teams, ensuring compliance and commitment to WHS & Environment and fostering a proactive approach to risk management.
- Organise, schedule, prioritise, control, and coordinate the delivery of maintenance for all civil assets throughout the city-including footpaths, roads, kerb and gutters, stormwater and drainage, rockpools, carparks, cycleways, and pathways.
- Oversee the effective operation and continuous improvement of the Council's workshop, including fleet, plant, equipment, and metal fabrication (Boilermakers), ensuring optimal asset uptime and lifecycle management.
- Lead the response to community incidents and liaise with local emergency service agencies and providers, acting as Council's operational liaison for emergency management.
- Collaborate with the Infrastructure Strategy and Planning Division to enhance the team's expertise in asset condition assessment, including preparing management plans, maintenance schedules, conducting condition surveys, and ensuring work management compliance.
- Implement intelligent defect management for road corridor assets and drive innovation to improve both civil maintenance and workshop functions.
- Champion the uplift in work management practices, working with your team and key stakeholders to deliver efficient, high-quality, and customer-focused maintenance services.
About you
You're an energetic leader with extensive experience in civil asset maintenance, workshop operations, and management. With a strong background in leadership, you thrive in managing teams, projects, and operations to achieve exceptional results.
Your deep understanding of WHS, environmental management, and relevant legislation allows you to ensure safe and compliant work environments across both civil and workshop teams. You possess a proven track record in project management, financial oversight, and contract management, coupled with the ability to develop and implement strategic plans that align with operational goals.
Your expertise in civil infrastructure, fleet and plant maintenance, risk management, and the maintenance of public assets enables you to drive efficient service delivery while ensuring long-term asset sustainability. Your qualifications in civil engineering or a related discipline, combined with your practical experience, equip you to lead in both strategic and hands-on capacities.
As a natural problem solver, you excel in identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing solutions that enhance performance across all areas of maintenance-including uplifting practices and fostering collaboration between teams.
You're passionate about fostering a positive team culture, mentoring staff, and collaborating with key stakeholders to deliver high-quality services that benefit the community. You have the people management skills to build trust, lead experienced teams through change, and create a well-oiled, high-performing maintenance operation.
