The Director, Strategy and Business Engagement supports the Anti-Slavery Commissioner to achieve his functions and responsibilities under the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) by liaising with senior stakeholders and developing strategies to promote compliance with the Act.

The Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner further strengthens Australia's efforts to address modern slavery by providing an independent pillar to Australia's response. For more information about the Commissioner please follow the link here:

As part of a small team, the Director, Strategy and Business Engagement will work closely with the Commissioner and other staff on a range of duties, including:

  • leading the development and implementation of the Commissioner's business and industry stakeholder engagement strategy
  • coordinating and negotiating with external stakeholders to reconcile policy objectives and develop shared positions on policy issues
  • managing and developing high-quality speeches, guidance materials, publications and other communications materials intended for a business audience on behalf of the Office
  • keeping abreast of developments in modern slavery supply chain transparency and due diligence trends and approaches
  • maintaining extensive stakeholder networks across industry and overseeing and managing the use of service providers, including contractors and consultants
  • contribute to the strategic planning of the Office and providing strategic advice and guidance to the Commissioner while undertaking other duties that contribute to the continuous improvement of policies, programs and procedures, and the efficient and effective functioning of the Office.

How you can help us make a difference

The ideal candidate will be able to use their experience in implementing supply chain due diligence, senior stakeholder management, and modern slavery policy and research to support the Commissioner in his role under the Modern Slavery Act. They will need to demonstrate drive and initiative and be able to manage high workloads under tight time frames. A technical understanding of the reporting requirements under the Modern Slavery Act is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful stakeholder engagement strategies with senior stakeholders
  • demonstrated technical understanding of the requirements of entities under the Modern Slavery Act and effective due diligence processes
  • highly developed written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to communicate information coherently and concisely to audiences with a range of backgrounds
  • demonstrated experience in modern slavery research and policy
  • strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills
  • capacity to work in a busy environment, working with competing priorities and ability to effectively manage and prioritize workload to deliver outcomes
  • ability to work with a high level of autonomy under broad direction.
