The award winning Gelganyem Group represents the Traditional Owners of the Barramundi dreaming and manages their rights and interests in relation to the Argyle diamond mine.

Working to support the development and operation of Gelganyem Land Management (GLM), the Program Manager supports the Land Manager with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the business, including the management of supervisors and staff, operational planning, service delivery, and data management.

The Program Manager is responsible for delivering GLM services which include: native seed scouting, collection, cleaning, treatment, and storage; weed control activities, including pest management and chemical handling; plant nursery propagation and infill planting; community garden and park maintenance and landscaping; vegetation surveys; environmental monitoring; and other land management activities as identified.

The GLM Program Manager plays a crucial role in the business to ensure that GLM's land management contracts are delivered effectively and the reputation of the GLM is built to be a trusted land management partner in the East Kimberley.

General:

  • Coordinate and carry out all appropriate office administration and compliance including ICT systems, filing, Gelganyem Group policies and procedures and financial management.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace and abide by workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist management with continual improvement in the land management operations.
  • Liaison with clients, stakeholders and community members as required, including the promotion and effective delivery of services.
  • Comply with ADM policies and procedures, where relevant.
  • Housekeeping and basic maintenance within the GLM facility.
  • Ensure all tasks and duties are performed in a safe, legal, and efficient manner.
  • Ensure all necessary team licenses and qualifications are maintained and kept up to date.
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate records of all activities in line with organisational, client, and licensing and regulatory conditions.
  • Support the Land Manager to run the GLM business, including acting up when the Land Manager takes leave.
  • Other tasks as required by management from time to time.

GLM Team Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the Land Manager, manage the day-to-day running of GLM, including staff management and reporting.
  • Where necessary, support the Land Manager with financial reporting.
  • Work with the Land Manager to have continual improvement and innovation in the GLM's land management operations and contribute to broadening the GLM's service scope.
  • Undertake and coordinate native seed scouting to locate populations of plant species required for seed collection and coordinate the planning of seed collection activities.
  • Provide supervision and oversee the operations of the seed collection and processing team, including cleaning, treatment, and storage, providing day-to-day management and support to ensure the safe and effective operation to meet all organisational and client requirements.
  • Managing the seed store including entering seed inventory, maintaining the seed inventory spreadsheets and ensuring ideal seed storage conditions are maintained.
  • Plan and manage weed control services, including overseeing the safe and effective use and handling of herbicides, developing work plans for projects and supervising teams to deliver services.
  • Support the development of the plant nursery and to develop our capacity and capability in growing native plant species for commercial opportunities.
  • Operate company vehicles, plant, and equipment, in line with the relevant regulations and requirements.
  • Transfer of knowledge to Traditional Owners regarding seed identification and collection.
  • Immediately report any issues, concerns or accidents and incidents to management and support the establishment and maintenance of best practice WHS.
  • Undertake necessary training and development to ensure skills and knowledge are maintained to satisfy future operational requirements.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Knowledge and Experience:

  • An understanding of the rights and aspirations of Gelganyem Traditional Owners and, ideally, previous experience of working in close partnership with Traditional Owner communities.
  • Experience supervising Indigenous employees and managing programs in a cross-cultural workplace environment.
  • Experience with the highly seasonal climate and workforce logistics of operation in the Kimberley region.
  • Understanding barriers to employment in remote regions.
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Knowledge of the East Kimberley and surrounding area.
  • Extensive practical experience working outdoors.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and motivating teams.
  • Demonstrated competency in business/project management.
  • Experience and work history in an agricultural, botanical, environmental or horticultural background.
  • Excellent understanding of health, safety, and environment (HSE) principles.
  • C class driver license.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of the local flora.
  • Previous work history in land management activities.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Botanical/Horticulture/Agriculture.
  • Senior First Aid.
  • Chemical handling training
