OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

The Head of Registration at the National Gallery of Australia leads a team of registration specialists to manage and care for works of art in the custodial care of the National Gallery including the national collection comprising of more than 155,000 works of art.

The role provides strategic advice, operational direction and specialist expertise to the Gallery for all Registration activities, incorporating Australian and international best practice and a focus on continuous improvement. The Head of Registration is responsible for ensuring the Gallery is compliant with national and international regulatory and legislative requirements related to the collection, display and movement of works of art.

The Head of Registration supports the Director, Deputy Director, Assistant Director, Collection Management & Art Services and senior leaders within the National Gallery to achieve organisational outcomes, providing specialist advice, influencing strategic decisions, and building organisational capability and culture.

The key duties of the position include:

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

In accordance with the EL2 work level standards, you will:

Provide leadership for the Registration Department consistent with the strategic and operational objectives of the National Gallery including contributing to Gallery wide strategic and operational planning; setting departmental strategic and operational goals; workforce and operational planning; budget administration and staff management.

Provide strategic advice and Registration specialist expertise to the Council, Director, Deputy Director, Assistant Director, Collection Management & Art Services and Gallery staff on matters relating to Registration best practice; the storage, movement, and insurance of the national collection; and Australian and international regulatory and legislative requirements related to the

collection, display and movement of works of art.

Work with the Assistant Director, Collection Management & Art Services to develop and implement policies, processes, systems and plans for collection management and care activities to support the national collection and all works of art in the custodial care of the Gallery.

Responsibly manage risk and resources in the Registration Department and for the care and management of the national collection.

Ensure the Gallery is compliant with national and international regulatory and legislative requirements related to the collection, display and movement of works of art.

Provide operational and strategic leadership and management to the Registration Department from a perspective of continuous improvement. This will include providing direction, guidance and training to staff in Registration in all areas of best practice.

Contribute to the Registration profession through modelling excellence in Australian and international best practice; representing the Gallery in external forums; contributing to contemporary Registration related professional bodies and networks with international, national, state and regional peers; and developing future Registration staff and leaders.

Eligibility

Citizenship – To be eligible for employment with the Gallery, you must be an Australian citizen.

Police Check – to be eligible for this role you must complete a police check.

Security Assessment - The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline security

clearance.

White ASIC pass – The successful applicant will be required to obtain and hold a White ASIC Pass to support the National Gallery Known Consigner status.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - Qualifications, Certifications and Registrations

Role specific mandatory qualifications or experience includes:

Relevant tertiary qualifications in Museum Studies, Arts Management, Creative Industries, Art History or Visual Arts or other relevant discipline or relevant experience.

Extensive experience in the Registration field in Australian or international art gallery or museum environments.

Desirable professional registrations include:

Professional membership of a relevant professional association including Australasian Registrars Committee, Australian Museum and Galleries Association, International Council of Museums or other relevant professional association.
