Our service offers specialist drug and alcohol doctors, nurses and allied health staff who respect the client's right to choose from a range of treatments offered with our services underpinned by a philosophy of harm reduction.

The Aboriginal Health Practitioner plays a vital role within a multidisciplinary healthcare team, working to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal patients and their families. This position provides culturally appropriate support, education, and referrals, acting as a key liaison between Aboriginal clients and the health service.

The role involves collaborating with clinical staff to offer practical assistance and building strong, supportive relationships with patients experiencing medical comorbidities and complex social challenges, with a focus on ensuring successful completion of drug and alcohol treatment programs.

What you will bring to the role

  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW) and have demonstrated knowledge of current Commonwealth, State and Local Aboriginal health priorities with the ability to effectively and sensitively liaise and communicate with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and agencies.
  • Hold a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice) and a current authority to practice as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) OR be working towards/ currently enrolled in a Certificate IV to enable transition to Aboriginal Health Practitioner status.
  • Active involvement in the local Aboriginal community, with demonstrated understanding and commitment to improving the health issues impacting on Aboriginal communities. Understanding of the health issues impacting on Aboriginal clients & their families
  • Ability to undertake research and/or evaluation including conceptual and analytical skills to determine whether interventions are effective in achieving their stated goals & objectives. Ability to plan develop and deliver health education initiatives.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and to liaise/negotiate with other health professionals to facilitate and promote culturally sensitive health care.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, use own initiative and take a lead role in initiating and carrying out community development activities.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, time management, and computer literacy including word processing and data entry skills.
  • Current Driver's License and willingness to use for work purpose travel
