As a Mathematical Modeller and Analyst at the Department of Infectious Diseases, you'll play a crucial role in developing agent-based models to optimise vaccine allocation and integrate diverse respiratory virus surveillance data. You'll have the opportunity to work on projects with national impact, collaborating with experts at the Doherty Institute and contributing to Australia's public health strategies. This role offers you the chance to advance your skills in mathematical modelling while making a tangible difference in infectious disease prevention and control.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and Adapt Mathematical Models: Assist with model-based studies of respiratory virus epidemiology and vaccine strategies, adapting existing agent-based models of population-level infection transmission.

  • Analyse and Integrate Surveillance Data : Apply advanced statistical methods to synthesise diverse respiratory virus surveillance signals, including genomic data from wastewater surveillance.

  • Contribute to Research Outputs: Assist in drafting peer-reviewed publications and reports for funders, communicating project findings effectively.

  • Mentor and Collaborate : Provide day-to-day mentoring for graduate research students and work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.

You may be a great fit if:

You are a skilled mathematician or statistician with a PhD in a relevant field, experienced in computational modelling of biological systems and passionate about applying your expertise to improve public health outcomes.

You may also:

  • Have a PhD in applied mathematics, mathematical biology, statistics, biostatistics, computer science, or an equivalent professional qualification.

  • Have demonstrated experience in producing computational code for mathematical models using Python, R, or C++.

  • Be proficient in using R or have the ability to learn it quickly.

  • Have excellent collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Have experience in publishing peer-reviewed scientific articles.

The Department of Infectious Diseases is a recently established department of the Melbourne Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences that is based at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute).

Research within the department encompasses infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, skin pathogens and emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Our researchers come from diverse backgrounds, including discovery research and basic scientists, clinician researchers, epidemiologists, public health physicians and microbiologists.
