Mechanical Team Lead – Melbourne

TMCO Pty Ltd | Building Services Engineering | Full-time

About Us

At TMCO Pty Ltd, we're not just another engineering consultancy. We're a multi-disciplinary firm with 17 years of proven success across Australia and New Zealand. With 80+ staff and offices across both countries, we've built a reputation for delivering smarter, greener, and cost-effective solutions that consistently outperform larger competitors.

We are safe, stable, and growing — the perfect blend of career security and exciting opportunity. Our Melbourne office is at the heart of our Australian growth strategy, and this is your chance to step into a leadership role that will shape both your career and TMCO's future.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Team Lead to anchor our building services team in Melbourne. This is a role for someone who thrives on technical leadership, enjoys mentoring others, and has the drive to deliver outstanding client outcomes.

You will:

  • Lead mechanical building services projects across all sectors, including health, education, civic, residential, aged care, hospitality, and commercial - we do everything.
  • Provide technical excellence in HVAC and building services design, driving sustainable, practical, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Mentor, coach, and inspire a team of engineers, supporting their professional growth while ensuring quality delivery.
  • Engage directly with clients, architects, and contractors, building trusted relationships based on reliability and plain-English advice.
  • Take ownership of project delivery, ensuring outcomes are on time, on budget, and aligned with TMCO's high standards.
What We're Looking For
  • A qualified senior consulting mechanical engineer (CPEng).
  • Proven experience leading building services design in consulting.
  • Strong technical expertise in HVAC and related mechanical systems.
  • A collaborative leader who enjoys mentoring and developing people.
  • A practical communicator who can translate technical solutions into clear, client-friendly outcomes.
Why TMCO?
  • Established and trusted – 17 years of proven success, 80+ staff, and a stable future.
  • Growth and opportunity – be part of our expanding Melbourne team with a direct influence on strategy and outcomes.
  • Balance and culture – we value people first, offering flexibility, professional trust, and support for life outside work.
  • Career development – we invest in training, mentoring, and pathways for growth.
  • Impact – you'll see the results of your leadership on projects, people, and clients every day.
Our Promise to You

At TMCO, you're not just a number. You'll be part of a nimble, ambitious, multidisciplinary firm where your ideas matter, your leadership inspires, and your contribution shapes our success. We pride ourselves on being "terriers" — small enough to be agile and personal, but tough enough to take on and beat the "big dogs" in the industry.

Ready to Lead?

If you're a talented, driven mechanical engineer ready to step into a leadership role, we want to hear from you. This is a chance to grow your career, build a team, and help define TMCO's future in Australia.

Apply today and lead with purpose at TMCO Pty Ltd.

The Relationship between TMCO Pty Ltd and TM Consultants Ltd (NZ)

TMCO Pty Ltd is the Australian sister company of TM Consultants Ltd (NZ), a multi-disciplinary consultancy founded in 2009 in Christchurch, New Zealand. TM Consultants now operates nationwide with approximately 80 staff.

In New Zealand, the practice provides full consultancy services including building services, structural, civil, fire (all disciplines), energy modelling, sustainability, and BIM/BIM management. TM Consultants has delivered award-winning projects across multiple sectors and maintains strong client relationships on both sides of the Tasman. Now in its 17th year, the firm continues to thrive with a strong forward workload.

As part of the trans-Tasman relationship, TM Consultants (NZ) will provide TMCO with access to staff across all disciplines, including a full in-house BIM team. All relevant disciplines are already registered as CPEng in Victoria, and TM Consultants has been delivering engineering services into Victoria since 2020.

In turn, TMCO will provide support back to New Zealand projects as required. With "boots on the ground" in Melbourne, TMCO is positioned to grow into a truly stand-alone Australian consultancy — independent from but strongly aligned with its New Zealand counterpart.

Your role will be to shape and lead the Victorian team, secure new work, and build TMCO's reputation as the local "go-to" consultancy of choice. At the same time, you will have the backing and expertise of one of New Zealand's strongest engineering consultancies to support this growth.

Our Strategy & Vision

At TMCO Pty Ltd, we're guided by a simple but powerful vision: to be the best providers of quality engineering, the first choice for clients and staff, and truly sustainable – environmentally, socially, and economically. These principles shape everything we do, from project delivery to team culture.

Our Goals

Over the next three years, we're focused on managed, ambitious growth. Our target is to be recognised as Australia's best tier-two engineering firm, expanding to 30 staff nationally while maintaining the agility and culture that set us apart. That means:

  • Outstanding delivery – projects on time, with less than 5% rework.
  • Happy clients and teams – NPS scores consistently above 70, and staff turnover under 10%.
  • National reach – building our footprint across Victoria, then into Queensland, while continuing to leverage our New Zealand base.
  • Sustainability at the core – integrating smarter, greener design solutions into every project.
How We Win

We describe ourselves as "terriers" – not the biggest, but determined, resilient, and relentless in pursuit of quality. We consistently outperform larger competitors by focusing on relationships, innovation, and outcomes. We invest heavily in our people, their development, and their ability to deliver solutions that exceed expectations.

The Result

The result of this strategy will be a company known for its people and for doing what we say we will do: exceed expectations and create a more sustainable built world.
