About the role
Nyrstar Hobart currently has full time trainee operator vacancies available in various departments across our plant. These positions are part of production teams focused on safely and consistently achieving production targets whilst developing strong working relationships with operations and maintenance personnel. We are looking for reliable, ambitious people who are motivated to develop into future operators of the organisation.
Reporting to a Production Team Leader, the successful applicants will be responsible for the safe and effective day to day operation of plant and equipment, to safely and consistently achieve production targets.
These roles are an integral part of our Production Teams and undertake a 12-hour shift work on a 2 day, 2 night and 4 off rotating roster pattern
You will be responsible for:
- The safe and effective operation of the plant and equipment within a designated production team to meet site production and organisational targets
- Achieving benchmark performance levels of cost, safety, environment, quality and output rates for the operation
- Complying with Nyrstar's Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and conducting business in line with the Nyrstar Values of Respect, Excellence, Teamwork, Integrity and Ownership
- Building a strong customer focus between maintenance and operating teams.
- Ability to self-manage behaviour and reactions, even under pressure.
- A desire to work flexibly to ensure safety, environment and production targets are met.
- Ensure housekeeping of work area provides a safe and healthy environment at all times
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Proven ability to work safely, consistently, and reliably with minimal supervision.
- The aptitude and flexibility to learn and apply new skills in various operating roles.
- Willingness to accept responsibility and accountability for high performance standards
- Positive communication skills
- A team mentality that includes understanding the impact of attitude, punctuality, and attendance.
- A minimum educational standard (literacy and numeracy) of year 10 with good computer literacy.
- Personal alignment to the Nyrstar values.
- Previous experience on a construction or manufacturing site highly regarded.
- Flexible, helpful attitude and an enthusiasm to go 'above and beyond' to support broader departmental and operational needs as we grow.
- Must be confident in their trouble shooting, problem solving and decision making abilities.
- Physically fit and able to undertake a range of manual handling tasks.
- Licenses or qualifications in Working at Heights, Confined Space, Forklift, and White Card are advantageous.

Nyrstar Hobart is a large scale zinc smelter located on Hobart's River Derwent, only a few kilometres from the Tasmanian capital's charming and cosmopolitan city centre. The facility uses the RLE process for zinc production. Hobart's key products are SHG zinc, die cast alloys and continuous galvanising grad (CGG) alloys. In addition, the site produces by-products of cadmium, copper sulphate, paragoethite, lead sulphate, leach concentrate and sulphuric acid.
This is a rare opportunity to work on site in the resources industry, in a capital city location.
