About the opportunity
Working in the Menzies Institute for Medical Research (Menzies) at the University of Tasmania, the Public Health Medicine Trainee will contribute to research, prepare papers for publication, and conduct translational research activities in public health. The position is accredited for training towards the Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine.
Menzies is one of Australia's leading health and medical research institutes. Menzies exists to improve human health and wellbeing by performing excellent basic, clinical and population health research that focuses on the major diseases affecting the Tasmanian community. Our research is aimed at improving patient care and clinical outcomes for the community by translating knowledge into policy and practice.
Research at Menzies is structured around research themes, flagships and research platforms. As part of the Environment and Respiratory Health Theme, the incumbent will study and acquire selected core public health medicine competencies and skills and undertake high-quality research of national standing.
What you'll do:
- Undertake high-quality research under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team, publish research findings in order to meet and regularly exceed the University's research performance expectations for Level A.
- Lead or participate in a range of public health activities and projects as agreed by the Director of the Menzies Institute for Medical Research; the Director of Public Health, Public Health Services Tasmania or their delegates.
- Study and acquire selected core public health medicine competencies and skills at a level to satisfy examination requirements for the Fellowship of Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine.
- Contribute to the development of Menzies by participating in community engagement and philanthropic initiatives, and internally through Institute planning activities and active membership of selected Institute committees.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University and locally and nationally with the discipline, relevant interdisciplinary domains, profession, industry and/or wider community.
What we're looking for:
- A medical practitioner registered in Australia who meets the eligibility criteria for advanced public health speciality training with the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine.
- Enthusiasm for research and contributing to evidence informed public health practice.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to population health principles and practice and demonstrated understanding of environmental determinants of health.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to negotiate and communicate effectively with a range of people and organisations.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed in management and timely completion of large projects and reports.
- Experience in public health medicine and/or working in partnership with other professional, commercial, and community-based organisations is desirable.
- A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally with the discipline, profession, industry (where relevant), and wider community.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $125,877 comprising base salary within the range of $83,198 to $107,587 plus 17% superannuation.

To be eligible for this position, you are required to hold Australian or New Zealand Citizenship, permanent residency or a valid visa that enables you to fulfil the requirements of this role. You must also meet eligibility criteria for advanced training with the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM). These include being a registered medical practitioner in Australia with at least two years of post-graduate clinical experience and completion of a Master of Public Health that covers all areas specified by AFPHM.
