Role

The literacy support officer works with students needing additional help to build their literacy skills to access the at-standard curriculum. This includes working with individual students and small groups using evidence-based approaches to accelerate their literacy development. The role will mainly work with Secondary students, but may also involve supporting students in the primary school

Responsibilities
  • Work with teaching teams to implement literacy intervention programs for students identified as requiring additional support.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to students to build literacy skills, including reading, writing, oral language, and comprehension.
  • Support students who are English as an Additional Language (EAL) through targeted strategies that build vocabulary, language confidence, and literacy fluency.
  • Support assessment and data collection processes, including maintaining accurate records of student progress.
  • Assist with the preparation of resources and materials to support differentiated literacy instruction across year levels.
  • Use a range of evidence-based strategies and tools to support the development of phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
  • Contribute to the creation of a literacy-rich environment throughout the College.
  • Liaise with classroom teachers, Year Level Leaders, EAL specialists, and Learning Specialists to ensure consistent approaches to literacy support.
  • Support the use of technology and digital resources in literacy learning.

Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling student information.

  • Demonstrated understanding of literacy development across primary and secondary years.
  • Experience working with children and young people with diverse learning needs, including English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners.
