About The Role
The Working Capital Manager is a key member of our Sydney-based finance team, responsible for optimising the firm's cash flow, managing billing and collections, and ensuring efficient use of capital across the business. This role is essential to maintaining liquidity, supporting strategic growth, and driving operational excellence.

You'll work closely with legal practice groups, operations, and senior leadership to improve billing practices, receivables management, and financial forecasting. A deep understanding of law firm economics, client engagement models, and financial controls is critical to success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the firm's working capital strategy, ensuring optimal cash flow and liquidity management.
  • Oversee billing, collections, and receivables processes, ensuring timely and accurate invoicing and payment.
  • Partner with legal teams to improve time recording, Data capture, WIP management, and client billing practices.
  • Actively challenge Develop and maintain cash flow forecasts, identifying trends and risks to inform strategic decisions.
  • Monitor aged debtors and implement proactive collection strategies to reduce DSO (Days Sales Outstanding).
  • Collaborate with the CFO and finance team to support budgeting, financial planning, and reporting.
  • Analyse client payment behaviours and recommend commercial terms that support financial sustainability.
  • Drive process improvements in billing systems, financial controls, and reporting tools.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards related to financial operations.
  • Provide training and support to legal and administrative teams on billing and financial best practices.
  • Support strategic initiatives such as pricing models, profitability analysis, and client account reviews.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, banks, and financial service providers as required.

Key Skills And Experience

  • Extensive experience in working capital management, financial operations, or commercial finance within a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Strong understanding of legal billing practices, WIP management, and client engagement models.
  • Proven ability to manage collections and reduce aged debtors through strategic interventions.
  • Exceptional analytical and financial modelling skills, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence across all levels.
  • High level of proficiency in financial systems and billing software (e.g., Aderant, Elite, Affinity, etc ).
  • Experience in process improvement, change management, and financial compliance.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities, with a collaborative and proactive mindset.
  • A tertiary qualification in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field is desirable.
  • CPA or CA qualification is advantageous but not essential.
