Psychosocial Support Worker – Alongside Program
2 days ago
At Directions Health Services, we believe in the power of connection, compassion and non-judgemental care. For nearly 50 years, we've been an innovative, not-for-profit leader providing holistic alcohol and other drug (AOD), mental health, and primary health services across the ACT and NSW.
Our multidisciplinary teams include GPs, nurses, counsellors, psychologists, peer workers, Aboriginal wellbeing workers and more. We all work together to provide integrated, person-centred care that supports hope, healing and wellbeing.
We're now looking for a Psychosocial Support Worker to join our Commonwealth funded Psychosocial Supports Alongside Program, helping individuals experiencing severe mental illness and associated psychosocial disability to build resilience, strengthen connections, and achieve their recovery goals.
About the Role
The Alongside Program provides time-limited, non-clinical psychosocial support to people living with complex mental health and substance use and other co-occuring challenges who may not have access to the NDIS or other capacity-building supports.
As a Psychosocial Support Worker, you'll work collaboratively with clients, their families, and multidisciplinary teams to provide practical, recovery-oriented support while helping people build confidence, develop skills, and reconnect with their community.
This is a rewarding, hands-on role where every day offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone's life.
This position is a full-time fixed term contract.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide person-centred, recovery-focused support that empowers clients to achieve their goals
- Work with clients and carers to co-design holistic, strengths-based individual support plans
- Deliver brief or intensive, time-limited psychosocial support (up to 6–20 weeks) through both centre-based and outreach services
- Support clients to connect with clinical services, treatment providers, housing, and community supports
- Provide brief interventions, advocacy, and harm minimisation education
- Facilitate self-help and group programs that foster connection and skill development
- Maintain accurate documentation, data collection, and reporting in line with quality and safety standards
- Collaborate closely with Directions' multidisciplinary teams and external partners to ensure coordinated care
- Contribute to a positive team culture and participate in supervision, training and quality improvement activities
About You
You're passionate about helping others find hope and purpose through recovery. You bring empathy, initiative and professionalism to your work, and thrive in a role where every day brings new opportunities to make a difference.
You will have:
- Certificate IV in Mental Health or equivalent
- A recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and harm minimisation approach
- Strong communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Good organisational and time management abilities
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and client information systems
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a flexible, multidisciplinary team
Desirable:
- Qualifications (or working towards) in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, Nursing or a related field
- Experience in mental health, AOD or community services
- Lived experience of psychosocial or related challenges
Other Requirements
- Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
- Working with Vulnerable People Registration
- Satisfactory National Police Check
- Current Driver's Licence
- Australian Citizenship or working rights in Australia
Why Join Directions?
At Directions, you'll be part of a purpose-driven organisation that believes in people, their strengths, their stories, and their capacity for change.
We offer:
- A supportive, inclusive and values-driven workplace
- Opportunities for meaningful professional development and career growth
- The chance to shape innovative, person-centred service delivery across the AOD and mental health sectors
- Generous salary packaging benefits
- 17½% leave loading
- Additional paid leave between Christmas and New Year
- The satisfaction of knowing your work genuinely transforms lives
If you're compassionate, motivated and ready to help people reconnect and rebuild their lives, we'd love to hear from you.
Apply now and help us continue to build a future where every person has the opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive.
All appointments will be conditional upon having suitable rights to work in Australia, a Working with Children Check, current First Aid and CPR certification, a satisfactory National Police Check and Driver's Licence.
