About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated experienced Senior Asset Accountant that's a great team fit and will contribute positively to Council's asset accounting function by ensuring timely and accurate recognition of assets, and all the asset transactions and processes throughout the asset lifecycle.
Key responsibilities of the successful candidate include:
- Supporting the development and ongoing maintenance of Council's asset accounting framework underpinning financial reporting, asset management practices and organisational objectives.
- Participate in the preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with the Local Government Act 2009, Local Government Regulation 2012 and Australian Accounting Standards. Liaise with Council's external auditors and any other regulatory authority in relation to statutory reporting and compliance.
- Provide leadership to the Asset Accounting Team in delivering high quality financial asset information.
- Develop, implement and maintain asset accounting policies, processes and systems in accordance with statutory requirements, best practice and contemporary asset management principles.
- Provide professional accounting advice and policy guidance to key business areas within Council to support corporate objectives, strategic asset management planning, systems and reporting.
- Support Council's annual asset revaluation process, including tendering, liaising with external valuers, validating data, financial analysis, and conducting the review of asset values with key business areas.
- With a focus on continuous improvement, you will be required to participate in professional development, ensuring up to date knowledge on best practice and processes associated with assets.
About you
As an accounting professional, you possess tertiary qualifications in accounting or equivalent, along with relevant industry experience. Complementing your formal training is a comprehensive understanding of asset financial accounting, together with a good understanding of corporate long term financial planning and asset management principles that relate to organisational sustainability.
As the successful candidate, you will have a minimum 3 years' experience in a team leader role in a local government finance area, or a similar role in the private sector, in a medium to large sized organisation. Experience should include:
- Team management
- Asset systems, reporting, and financial analysis
- Asset recognition and disposal, including renewals and upgrades
- Revaluation process, from both accounting and asset management perspectives
- Reporting and reconciliations, including year-end financial reporting
Strong attention to detail is vital in this role and well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate persuasively, engage in active listening, consult with a wide range of people at all levels of Council, foster collaboration, facilitate work groups and network with other councils.
A strong skillset in business acumen including the ability to prepare professional business communication such as reports, position papers, documents and presentations, with demonstrated ability to operate effectively with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel is a must.
Candidates possessing membership of a relevant professional body or working towards such will be highly regarded for this vacancy.
