Role and Responsibilities

This role is in the Senator the Hon. Dr Jess Walsh's office, supporting with research, communications and policy work. It will involve significant stakeholder work and assisting in preparation for Parliamentary business. The position is based in either Canberra or Melbourne with occasional travel as required.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Preparing briefing papers, policy or program advice for the Minister for Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Building and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders including other Ministerial offices, the Department of Education and sector stakeholders
  • Performing research and analysis tasks to inform decision making on policy, including strong judgement to identify issues and potential solutions
  • Preparing briefings for Parliament related matters
  • Writing speeches and other content
  • Other duties as required to support the operation of the Minister's office

Key Selection Criteria

  • P
    rior relevant roles in politics, media, government, unions, social justice or related organisations
  • An understanding (or demonstrated ability to quickly gain an understanding) of the Early Childhood Education and Care Sector is desirable.
  • Strong research and report writing skills
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills with the ability to build engagement with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently, take responsibility for own work outcomes and contribute to team priorities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines with competing priorities and deliver outcomes to a high standard
  • A commitment to the Labor movement is required.

Employment Conditions

The position is offered under the
Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984
and conditions are outlined in the
Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement
which include:

  • A commencing salary between $92,843 and $126,900 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills. Inclusive of an additional allowance of up to 16 ESA ($37,153) negotiated in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.
