About the Role
The Future Network Operations Engineer is responsible for developing and delivering strategic digital grid initiatives that strengthen real time network operations. The role focuses on improving outage management, supporting control room functions, optimising network performance and enabling efficient two way energy flows as the energy system transitions. It is a hands on engineering position that works across operational, engineering and technology teams.
About the Team
This role forms part of a newly established digital grid operations function that is modernising real time network operations. The team is focused on improving outage management, lifting system visibility and supporting future two way energy flows. Joining during the foundation phase means contributing directly to the direction, tools and processes that will shape how the network operates in the long term.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and implement digital grid projects that improve outage management, network optimisation and customer outcomes
• Conduct power system analysis and use advanced analytics and data querying to resolve operational challenges
• Support business process transformation to streamline operational workflows
• Assess new technologies and identify opportunities for automation and innovation
• Develop and maintain quality assurance processes to ensure digital grid systems meet performance, reliability and security requirements
• Create training materials, run simulations and deliver training for operational teams
• Maintain detailed documentation across configurations, processes and procedures
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support digital grid adoption
• Monitor and report on system performance through dashboards and analytical reviews
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for digital grid systems
• Stay current with emerging technologies, standards, regulations and cybersecurity expectations
Role Challenges
• Working in an operational environment that spans power systems, IT and OT systems and communications networks
• Making sound engineering decisions based on incomplete data sets
• Balancing engineering best practice with commercial considerations
• Influencing diverse stakeholder groups and supporting change adoption
• Applying new technologies effectively to real time operational settings
Key Relationships
Internal teams: Operations, Field Services, HSE, People and Culture, Data and Insights, Technology, Finance, Planning and Performance, Projects, Customer Operations, Design and Future Grid
External stakeholders: Vendors, industry groups, other power authorities
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
• C Class driver licence
Skills and Experience
• Experience in an energy, electrical or utility engineering environment
• Strong knowledge of power system analysis and engineering methods
• Proficient in data querying or scripting tools such as SQL or Python
• Exposure to DMS, EMS or DERMS is desirable
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem solving capability
• Effective stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
• Ability to work in a real time operational environment with resilience and sound judgement
