Role Summary

As a Retail Sales Assistant, you'll be the face of Fabric Lab—welcoming customers, helping them find the perfect fabrics, and ensuring the store operates smoothly and professionally.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service

• Greet and assist customers with fabric selection and provide knowledgeable recommendations.
• Offer advice on fabric suitability, care, and applications for fashion, costumes or interiors.
• Process purchases and returns through POS system accurately and efficiently.
• Handle customer queries or issues with professionalism, positivity and warmth.
• Handling wholesale orders and dealing with some of our wholesale customers.
• Participate in managing Social Media posts/stories (Instagram mainly).
• Stocktaking and taking professional photos of the fabric for the website.
• Occasional updates of the website and its contents.
• Cleaning and upkeeping of the store, making sure that it is neat and presentable.
• Active participation in the window display curation.
• Liaising with the other stakeholders of the business to make sure that the special and wholesale orders have been processed on their end.
• Contributing written content to the monthly blog post.
• Creating invoices via Xero for the special shop orders and wholesale orders.

Product & Store Knowledge

• Learn about different fabric types, weights, and best uses.
• Stay informed about textile performance, fashion trends, colour theory, new arrivals and product updates.
• Keep retail space clean, tidy, and well-stocked.
• Restock shelves, label products, and maintain visual display aesthetics.

Stock Handling & Fabric Prep

• Assist with cutting, folding, tagging, and preparing fabrics for sale.
• Unpack and check deliveries against order records.
• Support inventory counts and help organise back stock.

Marketing Support

• Support in-store content creation, styling, capturing and editing images, marketing and product photography and filming short-form video content for social media (e.g., staff picks, fabric highlights).
• Creating stories, posts and blog posts for Instagram and our website.

Skills & Requirements

• Previous experience in retail or customer service (fabric or fashion retail preferred).
• Friendly, professional, and confident communicator who truly understands that being a sales assistant is about building customer relationships in a genuine and caring way by offering warm and consultative service to fulfil needs and welcoming customers as if they are VIP guests.
• Enthusiastic learner, especially in textile knowledge and product details.
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced retail setting.
• Strong self-direction, initiative and patience.
• Available and flexible for emergency cover, for weekend and holiday shifts when needed as well as our fortnightly staff meetings.
• Sewing, fashion design or textile experience essential.
• Knowledge of Shopify POS, Shopify 'back of house' admin, Microsoft Office suite and Xero essential although training can be provided.
