The role is for a team member demonstrating solution development best practice including using contemporary rapid applications and technical infrastructure development methodologies such as iterative and agile software development. The Developer will be required to leverage the out of the box capabilities and develop custom IT solutions suite (cloud and on premise) for their specialist area as much as possible and associated software to deliver a wide variety of solutions to customers across UNSW. This role will work closely with (Senior) Developers within the team toward assigned objectives and seek guidance and support as required from the Team Leader or Senior Developer. The role of Developer reports to the Team Leader within the Sub Domain and has no direct reports.

Accountabilities:

  • Design, implement and configure complex IT solutions on the multiple solutions platforms which may include front-end web application platforms, back-end web application frameworks, cloud-based infrastructure platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure), server operating system admin, database operations, cloud microservices, network architecture, authentication, or cyber security.
  • Analyse, coordinate and document complex requirements of users from support and development requests raised and escalate highly complex technical requests to Team Leader or more senior Developer as required.
  • Deliver solutions using an Agile/Scrum/Test Driven Development approach guided by objectives set by Team Leader or Senior Developers.
  • Prepare unit/system/acceptance test cases to validate delivered solutions.
  • Test complex solutions implemented on the platforms, and work with Testing and Analysis colleagues in agile delivery.
  • Assist in training end users on the use of the solutions provided.
  • Engage and collaborate with the relevant technical staff members in UNSW IT to manage environments, deployments and tenancy administration activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service through responding to customer requests in a timely and efficient manner and understanding and delivering on complex customer needs.
  • Assist with identifying, recommending and implementing process improvements within the IT environment.

  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience:

  • A relevant degree and at least 3 years' relevant experience implementing solutions using various IT solutions platforms including two or more of: front-end web application platforms (e.g. , , Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS), back-end web application frameworks (e.g. PHP, Python, Django, Flask), or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), server operating system admin, database operations, cloud microservices, network architecture, authentication, or cyber security.
  • Ability to apply analytical skill and conceptual thinking to the analysis, design and implementation of solutions in working towards objectives set by the Team Leader or Senior Developers. Storing experience working with Agile delivery methodologies.
  • Strong experience using a delivery management tool (e.g. JIRA, Azure DevOps) and versioning control (e.g. GIT)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and proven ability to establish effective relationships with fellow IT colleagues, the business and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service and support customers and stakeholders at all levels, including a professional attitude to the delivery of high-quality outcomes.
  • Experience working in a formal environment interacting with stakeholders at all levels of an organisation.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong programming experience in Python (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, LangChain, etc.).
  • Experience with Generative AI models (LLMs, transformers, embeddings, vector databases).
  • Knowledge of data engineering practices (SQL/NoSQL databases, data pipelines).
  • Understanding of MLOps tools (Docker, Kubernetes, MLflow, CI/CD).
  • Familiarity with responsible AI practices (bias, fairness, explainability, security).
  • Experience with RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), chatbot frameworks, or conversational AI.
  • Exposure to DevOps/Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Ansible).
  • Experience integrating AI solutions into enterprise applications (CRM, LMS).
