The Director, Legal Strategy and Programs supports the Anti-Slavery Commissioner to fulfill his functions and responsibilities under the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) by applying wide knowledge of modern slavery policy and legislation and advanced organisational and project management skills.

The Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner further strengthens Australia's efforts to address modern slavery by providing an independent pillar to Australia's response. For more information about the Commissioner please follow the link here:

As part of a small team, the Director, Legal Strategy and Programs will work closely with the Commissioner and other staff on a range of duties, including:

  • coordinating and assuming responsibility for complex projects and work programs
  • overseeing and drafting legal and policy papers and briefings related to proposed changes to policies and programs
  • assessing changes in international and national legislative developments and lead the Office's response
  • monitoring developments in international best-practice legislative approaches to modern slavery
  • maintaining extensive stakeholder networks across the legal and research sectors and government agencies
  • managing and developing high-quality reports, guidance materials and other publications on behalf of the Office
  • oversee and manage the use of service providers, including contractors and consultants
  • contribute to the strategic planning of the Office and providing strategic advice and guidance to the Commissioner
  • undertake other duties that contribute to the continuous improvement of policies, programs and procedures, and the efficient and effective functioning of the Office.

How you can help us make a difference

The ideal candidate will be able to use their extensive policy and legal experience in addressing modern slavery risks to support the Commissioner in his role under the Modern Slavery Act. They will need to demonstrate drive and initiative and be able to adapt and respond to events and developments in the fight against modern slavery. A technical understanding of criminal justice responses to modern slavery is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • highly developed written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to communicate information coherently and concisely to audiences with a range of backgrounds
  • demonstrated ability to liaise widely and develop productive working relationships with a range of external stakeholders
  • demonstrated success in management and/or organisational strategy
  • demonstrated understanding of international best practice and evidence-based law and policy frameworks in response to modern slavery issues
  • capacity to work in a busy environment, working with competing priorities and ability to effectively manage and prioritise workload to deliver outcomes
  • ability to work with a high level of autonomy under broad direction
  • demonstrated calm, flexible, friendly and professional approach.
