The Role
Research Technology and Operations Division (RTO) has exciting opportunities for multiple roles in their Research Infrastructure and Science Operations (RISO) teams, both at Fishermans Bend (VIC) and Edinburgh (SA). We have one immediate vacancy in DSTG Edinburgh with multiple expected opportunities to become available in the near future across both sites to be filled by merit pool. The RISO Directorate is responsible for the strategic planning, implementation and sustainment of highly specialised physical research infrastructure for Defence.
The team provides corporate-level services related to physical research infrastructure and science operations via small teams working in site agnostic service hubs. Candidates should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capacity for multitasking and problem solving and a demonstrated ability to develop and foster productive working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. Additionally, candidates should have experience working in a team in an agile and dynamic environment and an understanding of facilities management, estate and infrastructure planning and the delivery of services facilitating research operations.
The duties of these roles include, but are not limited to:
- Contribute to site management, governance and coordination of national and site level project delivery.
- Assists with the scheduled desktop estate appraisal processes providing recommendations for maintenance and refurbishment activities.
- Support the delivery of research infrastructure projects at the program level and liaise with relevant stakeholders throughout the project life cycle.
- Responsible for the co-ordination of workflows, processes and documentation for Research Infrastructure e.g. scheduling works, maintaining DSTG Estate Investment Requirement register.

Research Technology and Operations (RTO) Division has a workforce of engineers and technicians, computational and digital science specialists and other professional staff who deliver a wide range of highly specialised research capability and innovative solutions which underpin the operations of DSTG. RTO's work areas undertake a broad, on demand and dynamic array of functions to keep DSTG at the forefront of research and development.
RTO's work areas include:
- Digital science and high performance computing and DSTG's eResearch strategy.
- Nationally recognised and unique research engineering capabilities.
- Specialised research safety, resource management and security services to assure sovereign S&T capabilities for Defence.
- Development and implementation of DSTG's research infrastructure strategy.
The Research Operations (RO) branch is responsible for operational business process reform and performance management of enabling services in DSTG – specifically, Research Safety; Research Security and Integrity; Research Infrastructure; Science Resource Management; and specialised Research Administration. RO delivers only those services that are unique to DSTG's specific S&T requirements.
