About the Fund

An Australian boutique investment manager (15+ yrs tenure, $350m+ FUM) operating across both public and private markets is seeking an Investment Associate to join its team. The fund mainly focuses on listed companies (market cap typically $150m – $1.5bn) in Australia and New Zealand, with a distinctive activist, high-engagement investment style positions). Alongside listed investments, the fund pursues selective off-market, private, or hybrid opportunities, often in partnership with institutional and family office investors.

This blended model creates a unique role for an investment professional who wants to apply investment banking or private equity skillsets across both public and private markets.

The Opportunity

The role combines rigorous equities analysis with hands-on involvement in activist engagement and transaction execution, while also contributing to bespoke private and hybrid deal opportunities.

You will work closely with senior members of the team, focusing on deep fundamental analysis, transaction support, and preparation of board-level materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed financial analysis and valuation work to support investment decisions.
  • Prepare investment papers and presentations for internal discussion and decision-making.
  • Analyse and evaluate strategic options to unlock shareholder value, including:
  • M&A opportunities (acquisitions, divestments, mergers, take private).
  • Capital raisings and balance sheet optimisation.
  • Corporate restructures and operational improvements.
  • Collaborate with senior team members to develop and test investment theses and activist strategies.
  • Work with company boards and management teams on initiatives to drive improved outcomes.
  • Support the execution of activist campaigns and corporate transactions, including preparation of board-level materials and engagement documents.
  • Monitor portfolio companies and contribute to ongoing performance reviews and reporting.

Key Requirements

  • 5–8 years' experience in one of the following:
  • Investment Banking
  • Private Equity investing
  • Corporate Development/M&A
  • Noting that we are not considering sell/buy side equities professionals who have no investment banking/private equity experience.
  • Strong technical skills in financial modelling, valuation, and investment analysis.
  • Excellent written and presentation skills, capable of producing "investment bank-quality" materials for senior stakeholders.
  • A genuine passion for investing and value creation, with the ability to think independently and critically.
  • Strong team orientation with the ability to work in a small, entrepreneurial environment.

Compensation & Incentives

  • Base salary in the range of $250k–$300k incl. superannuation.
  • Alignment to business success via discretionary bonus (linked to fund economics & carry in unlisted investments including investments already made by the fund)
