About the role
Prison officers are key in supporting the rehabilitation of the women in custody. You'll help create positive change while maintaining the safety and security of the facility.
Many women in custody have experienced significant trauma prior to coming into custody. As prison officers, it is our job to provide a safe environment for these women and guide them toward a more positive pathway in future.
We are role models to the women in custody at DPFC. We create positive working relationships with the women in our care and lead them in developing:
-
Self-respect and respect for others
-
Appropriate and pro-social behaviours
-
Constructive goal setting
-
Ownership of their actions
-
Integrity and honesty.
As a prison officer at DPFC, you will learn about trauma-informed practice and apply this in your work.
About you
We are looking for people who have a desire to empower the women in custody to become positive community members. We work with women in complex situations, so it is essential you can relate to people of different backgrounds. You:
-
Are resilient, empathetic, and patient
-
Communicate clearly and de-escalate challenging situations
-
Have a genuine desire to help people make positive changes.
There are no specific qualifications required to become a prison officer. It is your life experience that counts in this role.

Earn a competitive salary: Earn up to $91,202 with a base salary of $63,469 plus penalty rates and overtime
Full training provided: Paid, comprehensive eight-week training program to give you the skills you need
Career development: Opportunities for secondments, promotions, and further training and
Education: Complete a Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Adult Custodial)
Work-life balance: Generous leave and benefits, including annual salary increases and
Job security: Full-time, ongoing role with the Victorian Public Service.
