An exciting opportunity exists for a talented and passionate individual to join the First Peoples-State Relations Group as a Heritage Information Spatial Systems Officer at Department of Premier and Cabinet.
The First Peoples - State Relations Group is responsible for nation leading work in the areas of cultural rights, self-determination, treaty and truth - an extensive program of priority work with First Peoples. We recognise Victoria's First Peoples as the self-determining drivers of Aboriginal affairs in Victoria.
The Community Relations, Heritage Registry and Systems Branch supports the department to administer the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, which includes protecting and managing Aboriginal cultural heritage, maintaining a register of Aboriginal places and objects, working collaboratively with Registered Aboriginal Parties, and supporting the Secretary's role in administering Cultural Heritage Permits and Cultural Heritage Management Plans.
Working as part of the Heritage Registry and Information Systems Team, the Heritage Information Spatial Systems Officer role is responsible for helping to maintain spatial datasets which support the work of Community Relations and Heritage and the broader First Peoples - State Relations Group work profile and ensuring that they are accurate and up-to-date. The role also provides mapping support, technical and specialist advice to internal and external stakeholders and contributes to strategic policy development in relation to GIS and spatial information. About you
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Strong fundamental skills with GIS software, in particular ESRI ArcGIS and QGIS. Experience with model-builders, python (in particular ArcPy) and SQL scripting will be highly regarded.
- Demonstrated experience in managing spatial data, including the creation, editing, maintenance, extraction and conversion of data into a variety of formats. Proficient in ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and integrity while adhering to metadata standards and organizational data management protocols.
- Demonstrated experience in performing spatial data analysis using GIS tools to support evidence-based decision-making. Experience with identifying appropriate data sources, assessing limitations and applying appropriate geoprocessing techniques or image analysis to identify patterns, trends, and spatial relations.
- Proven experience in producing high-quality, user-friendly maps using cartographic principles and GIS software such as ArcGIS and QGIS. Skilled in applying appropriate symbology, scale, projection, and layout design to effectively communicate spatial information to a variety of audiences.
- Well developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills with sound judgment and capacity to make decisions and recommendations where diverse interests need to be considered.
- Highly- developed interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and provide advice on processes and policies with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
Mandatory requirements:
- A relevant tertiary degree in Geographic Information Systems or a degree in a relevant discipline involving advanced studies in Geographic Information Systems.
