Purpose of the role

The Head of Faculty is a strategic curriculum and pedagogical leader responsible for shaping teaching, learning and assessment

across their faculty. They lead a team of teachers in delivering high-quality, evidence-based programs and work closely with the

Head of Teaching, Learning and Student Progress to ensure alignment with College-wide strategic goals.

The role encompasses curriculum innovation, data-informed planning, staff development, and the design and implementation

of programs that celebrate the distinctiveness of the subject discipline. Heads of Faculty play a vital role in fostering reflective

professional cultures, encouraging collaboration, and ensuring that literacy and interdisciplinary thinking are embedded across

learning areas.

They also act as a key bridge between classroom practice and whole-school direction, supporting cross-faculty collaboration,

contributing to professional learning across the College, and helping ensure curriculum continuity and coherence.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Curriculum Development

  • Evaluate and enhance curriculum in line with current best practices and the Victorian Curriculum.
  • Lead implementation of innovative and authentic assessment practices.
  • Ensure curriculum is mapped and aligned with College systems and strategic directions.
  • Coordinate and oversee VCE subject delivery and assessment practices.
  • Support the delivery of effective and contemporary VCE methodology.
  • Ensure compliance with VCAA, VRQA and College curriculum expectations.
  • Oversee faculty documentation, including Curriculum Statements and Courses of Study.
  • Promote integration of place-based and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Support interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches across subjects and faculties.
  • Support the development of literacy and numeracy in ways appropriate to the subject area and aligned with whole-

school strategies.

  • Ensure teaching programs build general capabilities, including critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding,

intercultural understanding, and personal and social competence.

  • Collaborate with relevant leaders, including the Head of Literacy and Head of Mathematics, to ensure coherence and

innovation across faculties.

  • Lead assessment practices across the faculty, including common assessment tasks, moderation, and quality assurance

for both formative and summative assessments.

  • Ensure effective use of College systems for curriculum documentation, mapping, reporting, and evaluation.

  • Engage with relevant subject associations, curriculum networks, and professional communities to inform and improve

faculty programs.

Leadership and Professional Learning

  • Lead and develop a high-performing faculty team that is reflective, collaborative and student-focused.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and professionally supportive faculty culture.
  • Provide instructional leadership by modelling best practice and supporting teacher development.
  • Identify and mentor emerging leaders within the faculty to support succession planning.
  • Coordinate professional learning activities and contribute to whole-school improvement strategies.
  • Chair regular faculty meetings and work constructively with the Curriculum Committee.
  • Support the professional growth and appraisal processes of faculty team members.
  • Mentor early-career teachers and support performance development processes.
  • Coordinate and present faculty-related content at information evenings and events.
  • Liaise with relevant community groups or Friends of Faculty programs to strengthen learning connections.
  • Facilitate and participate in College-wide professional learning aligned with strategic directions.
  • Contribute actively to collaborative leadership within the Curriculum Committee, taking shared responsibility for

shaping academic direction across the school.

Use of Data and Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor student progress using data and evidence to identify trends and target improvement.
  • Lead faculty-level discussions and planning based on student performance and engagement data.
  • Implement targeted strategies to support student growth across all levels of achievement.
  • Organise, lead, and review appropriate academic support and intervention strategies to improve student learning

outcomes.

  • Ensure faculty team members take shared responsibility for identifying students requiring support and for taking timely

action.

  • Work closely with relevant teams to make appropriate referrals for students requiring additional learning or wellbeing

support beyond the classroom context.

  • Conduct regular evaluation and reporting of faculty initiatives and outcomes to support school-wide planning.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Teaching, Learning and Student Progress on key school improvement goals.
  • Encourage data literacy and shared responsibility for student progress among team members.

Faculty and Resource Management

  • Manage the faculty budget responsibly and strategically.
  • Ensure effective use of College facilities and learning environments.
  • Promote and support a mix of co-curricular and enrichment opportunities, including those aligned to curriculum goals

and others that build interest-based student engagement.

  • Allocate teaching duties to support student learning, team strengths, and timetable needs.
  • Lead digital learning practices and promote meaningful integration of technology across the faculty.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Teaching, Learning and Student Progress and the Director of People and Culture to align

staffing decisions with student needs, strategic priorities, and sustainable workforce planning.

  • Support subject selection processes by advising on curriculum offerings, student pathways, and faculty capacity.
  • Exercise financial stewardship by managing budgets with a focus on educational value, efficiency, and long-term

sustainability.

Head of Mathematics – Faculty-Specific Context and Expectations

  • Leads Mathematics programs across Years 7–12, including General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and

Specialist Mathematics.

  • Leads the school-wide development of numeracy and supports integration across disciplines.
  • Builds literacy through communication of mathematical reasoning, written explanations, and vocabulary development.
  • Develops general capabilities including problem-solving, critical thinking, persistence, and attention to detail.
  • Coordinates use of adaptive learning platforms and targeted intervention tools.

  • Supports VCE preparation through structured revision, data-informed goal setting, and exam technique.

  • Fosters enrichment opportunities such as competitions, problem-solving workshops, and real-world mathematics

applications.

  • Leads moderation of tasks and consistent use of common assessment tools.

Selection Criteria

Experience

  • Experience teaching senior Mathematics, including Mathematical Methods and/or Specialist Mathematics.
  • Ability to lead team-wide assessment moderation, numeracy development, and VCE preparation programs.
  • Involvement in, or contributions to, the school community beyond the classroom.

Skills and attributes

  • Proven leadership in developing and inspiring a high-performing Mathematics team.
  • Strong understanding of Mathematics curriculum and pedagogy across Years 7–12, including VCE.
  • Commitment to innovative, student-centred teaching and differentiated learning.
  • Ability to analyse data to support student growth and achievement.
  • Capacity to build collaborative, professional relationships across the College community.
  • Engagement in ongoing professional learning and contribution to whole-school improvement.
  • Knowledge of child safe practices, including reporting requirements.

Qualifications and Employer Requirements

  • Appropriate qualifications for teaching in specialised subject area
  • Clearance to work with children - registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)
  • Entitled to live and work in Australia
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • A commitment and capacity to contribute to the College's co-curricular program
  • Completion of Protecting Children – Mandatory Reporting and Other Obligations (training provided by DoE Victoria)
