About Us
Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service (BWAHS) are the lead specialists in Aboriginal specific family violence services across the Eastern Metropolitan Region. The organisation has developed an excellent record of providing high quality family violence and trauma informed intensive case management, integrated family service responses and evidence based therapeutic programs to individuals and groups for a whole family approach.
POSITION SUMMARY - Full Time
This is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identified Position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service (BWAHS) Men's Case Manager (MCM) provides family violence case management and case coordination to men from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) who are identified as using family violence or are impacted by family violence. Using a strengths-based approach, the MCM will undertake comprehensive needs and risk assessments of men and their families. The MCM will work collaboratively with Aboriginal men and their families to address family violence, promote perpetrator responsibility, strengthen individuals and their communities and reduce barriers to behaviour change.
A key focus of the role is to work in collaboration with other BWAHS programs, other Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO's), the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Family Violence Partnership and external support services to ensure a comprehensive integrated case plan is developed and implemented. Although the position has a home base in Lilydale, this is an outreach position and the delivery service is using that model.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Case Management
- Provide a culturally appropriate outreach service to a full case load of Aboriginal men referred to the Men's Case Management Program.
- Support clients to identify their safety and support needs and assist them in developing a personal support plan to address priorities for themselves and their families.
- Provide case management and effective case coordination that reduces barriers for men in accessing behaviour change services.
- Actively promote responsibility and accountability for the clients' use of violence.
- Put in place such steps, or make appropriate referrals, as required to immediately secure the safety of families.
Engagement of key stakeholders
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with other Family Violence services including Men's Behaviour Change programs and other government and community organisations to ensure multidisciplinary interventions as required.
Culturally informed practice
- Contribute to culturally informed practice.
- Contribute to a positive and culturally safe workplace.
Manage Risk
- Undertake Family Violence Risk assessments to establish levels of safety and risk to the men's families referred to the program.
- Undertake ongoing analysis of the family's safety and wellbeing including an analysis of family capacity to maintain safety for children in the family.
- Lead and participate in Risk Management Meetings within BWAHS.
Training and professional development / capability development
- Participate in regular clinical supervision as negotiated with the Men's Therapeutic Coordinator.
- Undertake training and professional development opportunities.
- Complete compulsory training listed in the training check list such as MARAM, FV Foundation and Working with Men who use Violence.
Administration
- Maintain records including case notes, reports, plans and statistics within required timelines including data and reports required to meet BWAHS contractual obligations.
- Ensure that client records are in accordance with BWAHS quality and audit requirements.
- Comply with and report upon all funding agencies data recording requirements, accurately and in a timely manner.
Policies, Procedures and Systems
- Comply with all organisation policies and procedures.
- Proactively communicate, identify, report and assess WHS related risks and hazards.
The employee will be expected to perform other duties outside of those set out in the position description as directed from time to time which are within the employee's skill, qualification, experience and competence level to meet the organisation's operational needs.
The Position Description may be amended from time to time at the organisation's discretion. Where there is inconsistency between KPI's in this Position Description and those within the Organisation Objectives, the Organisation Objectives will stand.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- An understanding of contemporary Aboriginal culture and the history of intergenerational trauma as it relates to the role of men in the family unit.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrated relevant work experience, meeting Recommendation 209.
- Experience working in the family violence sector, risk assessment and managing risk in a related area.
- An understanding of sharing information legislation and the duty of care .
- Theoretical understanding of the the issues underpinning family violence, particularly as it relates to the cultural context of men who use violence.
- Experience in providing case management or case coordination with Aboriginal families or men.
- Ability to engage men and their families of varying ages, stages and compositions who have multiple and complex needs.
- Understanding of State and Regional Aboriginal Family violence strategies and frameworks.
- Possess basic computer skills including Outlook and Word. Experience with or a willingness to learn data reporting applications will be looked upon favourably.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Willingness to embrace opportunities for professional development where appropriate.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
It is a condition of employment that BWAHS be provided with the following:
- Current Victorian Driver's License
- Current Working with Children's Check
- Undertake National Police Check
- This position is designated under the Multiagency Risk Assessment and Management framework (MARAM) Comprehensive (Tier 1) level which requires mandated MARAM Family Violence Comprehensive Risk Assessment training and responsibilities.
- A degree in social work (or equivalent) or willingness to work toward the qualification in line with the mandatory minimum qualifications policy.
