College Context

Alta-1 College Queensland is a multi-sited, independent, co-educational, Special Assistance School (SAS) for Years 7–12. We work with at-risk young people in deliberately small campus settings, providing trauma-informed, wrap-around support that empowers them to discover their identity and purpose through a recovery focused education. As a Christian organisation, we believe that every young person is made in the image of God and holds inherent and irrevocable value. We believe that every young person matters and therefore deserves safety and respect. The Opportunity

Alta-1 College QLD is growing in response to the increasing need for quality education alternatives for young people who are at-risk of educational disengagement and negative life outcomes. The college delivers a model that has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of young people across the last decade in Queensland. Our vision to see lives changed "one-at-a-time" as well as our mission to "transform communities through justice, knowledge recovery and hope" are the other key drivers that underpin our desire to reach more young people. This season of growth is both exciting and challenging and staff joining the college will need to carry a genuine heart for at-risk young people, a willingness to work closely with others in team and a capacity to navigate change flexibly. While there are dynamic elements to our current season the college operates from a strong base of a decade of operation and has a consistent, passionate and community-minded staff team.

The college is entering a new era and, for the first time, is appointing a dedicated full-time Business Manager. This is a pivotal appointment for a growing college and the characteristics that will define the successful candidate will include; a genuine heart for the college's mission, an ability to design and strengthen systems that support a flourishing workforce, strong technical and strategic capabilities, the highest standards of personal integrity and professional conduct, and a willingness to work as part of a community minded team. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, and reporting alongside the Principal to the Board, there is a real opportunity to shape the college's future and make a lasting positive impact in the lives of many staff, students and families.

Role Purpose & Key Responsibilities

The Business Manager plays a critical leadership and operational role in ensuring the efficient and sustainable management of the College's finances, resources, and compliance obligations. Working closely with the Principal, Senior Leadership Team and governing body, the Business Manager provides strategic and operational oversight of financial management, facilities, compliance, human resources support, and administration to enable the College to deliver its educational and community mission effectively. The key domains of responsibility include:

The role requires the highest levels of professional integrity, effective communication, and a strong commitment to the central purpose of the organisation.

Role Selection Criteria

Essential (applicable to all college staff):

  • Commitment to Christian faith, college values and the highest standards of professional conduct
  • A demonstrated genuine heart for at-risk young people

Essential (role specific):

  • Professionalism (including high levels of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability)

  • Leadership and Management Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams and care for staff.

  • Strong planning, organisational, and problem-solving skills. with demonstrated project management skills.
  • Proven capacity to provide strategic financial and operational advice.
  • Experience in financial management
  • Technical Competence

  • Proficiency in financial software, spreadsheets, and reporting systems.

  • Understanding of human resources systems, contracts, and payroll processes.

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience in the education or not-for-profit sector.
  • Experience/familiarity with BGA processes
  • Strong understanding of compliance requirements in education and not-for-profits.

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • Degree in business, accounting, or related field (CPA/CA desirable).
  • Holder of a valid Blue Card (or having the ability to obtain one)
  • Willingness to undertake National Criminal History Check
  • Holder of a valid driver license
