About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced standalone
Payroll Manager
to take ownership of a full payroll function in a supportive, high-performing environment.
You'll work closely with the Finance and HR teams, managing the end-to-end payroll for approximately 700 permanent and casual staff. With one direct report, you'll ensure accuracy, compliance, and a positive payroll experience for all employees: while driving efficiency and system improvements along the way.
This role reports into an amazing Head of Finance who is truly invested in their people; known for mentoring, encouraging growth, and creating a genuinely supportive culture where you'll be empowered to thrive.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and process end-to-end fortnightly payroll for up to 700 staff
- Interpret complex awards and legislation, including CMEA, Fair Work Act, and NES
- Maintain accurate payroll and employee records
- Oversee superannuation, taxation, salary packaging, and related entitlements
- Prepare and deliver payroll reporting and analysis for Finance and HR teams
- Respond to payroll queries promptly and professionally with a service-focused mindset
- Liaise with external stakeholders such as the ATO, super funds, and auditors
- Drive process improvement, automation, and system enhancements
- Support year-end reconciliations, audits, and compliance reviews
About You
You're an experienced payroll professional who enjoys autonomy, accuracy, and people connection. You thrive in collaborative, community-minded environments and bring both technical knowledge and a positive, can-do attitude.
- Payroll experience in the
education
or complex multi-entity sector (preferred) - Strong understanding of
CMEA Award, Fair Work Act, and NES - Experience with
MicrOpay
Meridian, ConnX, or ELMO (or similar systems) - Excellent organisational and analytical skills
- Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and data accuracy
- Collaborative communicator who enjoys building relationships across teams
- Current Working With Children Check and full working rights in Australia
