The Illawarra Medical Network may offer 1 or 2 year contracts (as required form completion of basic training) to applicants who have completed their time in an accredited BPT role. All other applicants will be offered 3 year contracts, subject to change, with final rankings from the application process and service provision requirements determining the length of training contract that will be offered. Previous or current registration with RACP in non-BPT roles does not guarantee a 2 year contract.

Please also note that once a BPT offer is accepted, any application you make for any subsequent round BPT position during the 2026 AMR campaign will not be considered whilst you are holding that offer.

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Illawarra Medical Network as a Basic Physician Trainee.

The Illawarra Medical Network (IMN) is the newest Basic Physician Training (BPT) Network in New South Wales consisting of three sites Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Bulli hospitals. The Network embodies the CORE values of NSW health, values growth mindsets, and respect for rich cultural diversity and caring responsibilities. The Network's goal is to provide a balance between service provision and training with a supported and facilitated training experience to enable a trainee's growth and development into a capable and confident physician, while understanding and respecting individual circumstances. The Network strives to align your experience with the values, policies and procedures of NSW Health's Health and Education training Institute (HETI) and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).

We are closely affiliated with the University of Wollongong (UOW) and collaborate on education and research activities. An academic suite located at Wollongong Hospital supports both the Graduate School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University. Trainees are invited to supervise and teach medical students on clinical placements and collaborate on research projects within ISLHD and UOW.

The IMN structures your training and ensures that your employment aligns with the RACP and HETI mandated guidelines for achieving certified training. The IMN delivers a structured teaching programme to enable examination success and develop your clinical process skills, medical expertise, and professionalism across the 3 training phases of the RACP, with a dedicated program for PREP1, PREP2, and PREP3.

Hospitals in the IMN are situated within the Illawarra, an hour south of Sydney. The IMN has the ability in NSW to offer trainees length of training contracts without the need to relocate as all facilities are in close proximity. The IMN also is linked closely with the local Advanced Training program providers. All BPT training terms have advanced training links and opportunities.

Where you'll be working

Wollongong Hospital is the Illawarra and Shoalhaven's major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed base of more than 500. The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Cancer Care Centre and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Health Education Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services. The IMN is structured so that the examination year of training is spent based at Wollongong hospital with access to the variety and complexity of cases and education opportunities at the main referral hospital. The IMN rotations at Wollongong include Acute General Medicine, Medical Assessment Unit, Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Haematology, Medical Oncology, Neurology, Geriatrics, Infectious Diseases, Endocrinology and Intensive Care Medicine. Opportunities with the Acute General Medicine services collaborating with other district based services provide exposure to Pharmacology, Rheumatology, Palliative Medicine, Peri-operative Medicine, Peri-natal Medicine, Sexual Health Medicine, Addiction Medicine, Toxicology, Eating Disorders and Mental Health.

Wollongong is located an hour's drive south of Sydney on a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.

Shellharbour Hospital is a 197 bed, acute facility providing a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services. The inpatient services include aged care, medical, surgical, mental health and acute medical assessment inpatient beds, plus a day surgery unit. The hospital also provides emergency services, elective surgical services, general medical, antenatal and primary family health care, satellite renal dialysis, as well as adolescent and adult mental health services. The IMN rotations at Shellharbour are based in acute general medicine and aged care.

Shellharbour is located on the picturesque South Coast of NSW, located over an hour's drive south of Sydney, and has a rapidly growing population. Surrounded by pristine beaches, renowned fishing/diving spots and rolling hills in the countryside, Shellharbour is rapidly growing with many family friendly attractions. Shellharbour hospital is a 20 minute drive from Wollongong.

The Bulli Aged Care Centre associated with Bulli Hospital opened in August 2020 and is an innovative collaboration between ISLHD and the Illawarra Retirement Trust. The new $50.4 million Centre of Excellence has been specifically tailored to meet the requirements of the local population. Bulli Hospital works closely with the Aged Care Specialist team at Wollongong Hospital to ensure a safe and timely transfer of patients who have completed an acute episode of care and require additional assessment, Sub-Acute medical management and planning for ongoing care needs. Bulli Hospital also provides an urgent care centre for the local community, inpatient rehabilitation, and inpatient palliative care services outpatient Geriatric Services via the Geriatric Outpatient Therapy unit. This service is supported by a Geriatrician, Advanced Trainee in Aged Care, specialist nursing staff and Allied Health. The IMN rotation at Bulli hospital is in aged care and rehabilitation with collaborative education and training with the advanced trainees in aged care, rehabilitation, and palliative care at this site. Bulli Hospital is a 15-minute drive from Wollongong.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) is to provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment in inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisations within the Network.

Basic Physician Training roles consist of rotations through medical departments, working under an appropriate level of supervision by consultants. Rotations have different levels of responsibility and team structures. BPTs will gain increasing clinical autonomy and accountability as team leaders throughout the course of the three-year training program, building on their skills and attributes with the goal of entering an Advanced Training program.

BPTs undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with the treating physician when appropriate, in the following activities:

  • Clinically assess patients, incorporating consultation/history taking, examination, and formulation of a differential diagnosis and management plans
  • Discuss diagnoses and management plans with patients and their families or carers
  • Document the progress of patients in multiple settings
  • Prescribe medications tailored to patients' needs and conditions
  • Transfer care of patients
  • Choose, organise and interpret investigations
  • Assess and manage acutely unwell patients
  • Plan, prepare for, perform, and provide after care for important procedures

  • MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

  • This role requires eligibility for or current registration as a Basic Physician Trainee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and intent to obtain Fellowship of the RACP. What is your current RACP status?
  • Qualifications and experience as outlined in the Essential Requirements for the role.
  • Demonstrated recent relevant experience in clinical medicine and ability to work in a complex clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealings with patients, team members and supervisors.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, teaching, research, quality improvement and clinical leadership in medicine.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills in a clinical setting within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven ability to apply clinical knowledge and concepts in practical situations in the context of multiple competing priorities.
