Caboolture QLD, Australia Kurbingui Youth Development Ltd Full time $26,000 - $54,000 per year

About Us

Kurbingui Youth & Family Development is a proud Aboriginal-Controlled Community Organisation (ACCO) based on Turrbal Country in North Brisbane, Yuggera Country in South Brisbane and Gubbi Gubbi Country in Moreton Bay, with programs and services expanding across South East Queensland.

For over 20 years, we've been walking alongside our community – supporting families, young people and individuals through our many programs, which include: Family Services, Social & Emotional Wellbeing, Employment & Training, NDIS Support, Crisis Intervention Programs, Youth Justice & Bail Diversionary Programs, Family and Child Connect, and a wide range of cultural and community programs.

At Kurbingui, we believe that true impact happens when people feel seen, supported and empowered. We're not just building programs – we're building pathways, opportunities and stronger futures for our community. As we continue to grow, we remain grounded in culture, guided by our values, and driven by a vision of connection, empowerment and lasting change.

Kurbingui is recognised as a leading community organisation in Brisbane, trusted for our commitment to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander families, young people and communities.

Our programs and services are built on cultural knowledge, respect and partnership. We are proud to be a respected and reliable voice in the community, and we continue to grow so that we can reach and support more people across Queensland.

Joining Kurbingui means becoming part of a movement that is strengthening culture, creating opportunity and making a difference every day.

About the Role

The Youth Mentor with the Staying on Track Program plays an inspiring and hands-on role in supporting young people who are engaged with, or at risk of entering, the Youth Justice system. Funded through the Department of Youth Justice, this program is designed to give young people the support, guidance, and opportunities they need to make positive choices and re-engage with community, culture, education, and employment.

As a Youth Mentor, you'll walk alongside participants in a genuine and empowering way—helping them to build resilience, strengthen their cultural identity, and see a positive future for themselves. Through one-on-one mentoring, group activities, and cultural engagement, you'll encourage young people to set achievable goals, learn vital life skills, and access the right services and supports. Just as importantly, you'll be a consistent and trusted role model, showing that challenges can be overcome and new pathways created. This role is about making meaningful connections, working closely with families, community, and partner organisations, and advocating for young people so they feel supported, valued, and inspired to stay on track.

About You

Essential

  • You are passionate about working with young people and believe in their ability to change their future when given the right support and opportunities.
  • You'll bring experience working with young people in mentoring, youth work, community services, justice, or related fields, with the ability to build trust and provide consistent guidance.
  • You are a strong communicator and relationship builder, able to connect with young people, their families, and community in a way that is genuine, respectful, and culturally safe.
  • You demonstrate cultural awareness and are committed to embedding cultural safety and inclusion in everyday practice, particularly when working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families.
  • You have sound knowledge or a willingness to learn about youth justice processes, standards of care, and best practice in supporting young people at risk.
  • You'll possess a current Positive Blue Card (Working with Children Check) or be willing to obtain one.
  • You hold a current Queensland Driver's Licence and are confident to travel to meet young people where they are—whether in correctional facility, community, or home settings.
  • IT & Systems capability, particularly in using HRIS Software, CRMs and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Previous experience working in the youth justice sector, community services, or with young people at risk of offending or re-offending.
  • Experience in delivering mentoring, life skills, or culturally responsive programs for young people.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and strong connections within local communities.
  • An understanding of child protection legislation, trauma-informed practice, and social and emotional wellbeing frameworks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with government, schools, employers, and community organisations to create positive pathways for young people.
  • Lived experience that brings empathy, relatability, and authenticity to the mentoring role.
