Boundary Oasis General Store is a local convenience store and takeaway located in Hervey Bay, Australia. It offers a range of everyday essentials, snacks, beverages, and casual takeaway food, serving as a convenient stop for both locals and visitors. At Boundary Oasis General Store, the Cook will be responsible for preparing, seasoning, cooking, plating, and presenting food in accordance with the menu standards of Boundary Oasis. The role will involve ensuring food quality, maintaining kitchen hygiene and safety, managing inventory of ingredients, and occasionally assisting with menu planning or supervising junior kitchen staff. The Cook will help maintain a high level of consistency in taste, presentation, and food safety.

Job Duties:

  • Receive and inspect incoming food and ingredient deliveries, checking freshness, quality, and compliance with specifications.
  • Perform mise en place: wash, peel, cut, chop, marinate, and prep vegetables, meat, seafood, etc., for service.
  • Execute cooking tasks across multiple stations (e.g. grill, sauté, fry, bake) following recipes, timing, and portion control.
  • Taste during cooking process and adjust seasoning (salt, herbs, spices) to maintain consistency and flavor balance.
  • Plate and present dishes attractively, adding garnishes, sauces, and finishing touches as needed.
  • Ensure all cooked items meet the standard in terms of temperature, doneness, and appearance.
  • Handle special requests and dietary modifications (e.g. vegetarian, gluten-free, allergies) when required.
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain cooking equipment, utensils, work surfaces, and kitchen areas.
  • Monitor stock levels of ingredients, foresee consumption needs, and communicate order requirements to kitchen manager.
  • Minimize food waste by proper portioning, storing leftovers safely, and rotating inventory (FIFO — first in, first out).
  • Provide guidance or on-the-job training for kitchen assistants, interns, or junior cooks when assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Head Chef or Kitchen Manager on new dish trials, menu updates, or plating improvements.
  • Work in compliance with food safety, hygiene, and occupational health & safety standards (e.g. proper storage temperatures, personal hygiene, safe handling of knives and equipment).
  • Assist with closing or opening kitchen tasks (e.g. checklists, cleaning, restocking) to ensure smooth transitions between shifts.

Qualification & Experience

  • AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
  • At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above.
  • Proficient in a variety of cooking techniques (grilling, sautéing, frying, steaming, baking).
  • Strong understanding of food safety, hygiene, and sanitation practices (e.g. hazard control, cross-contamination, temperature control).
  • Physical stamina (standing long hours, lifting moderate weights, working in hot kitchen conditions).
