About the opportunity

This is a temporary role for 3 months to cover an organisational absence, with duties carried out 1 day per week (or equivalent). Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the ALS Board and Executive Team by providing expert governance advice, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory obligations, and upholding best practice standards across the organisation.

Acting as the key link between the Board, company members, management, and regulatory authorities, this position is responsible for overseeing governance processes, managing board and member meetings, maintaining statutory records, and ensuring transparent and accountable decision-making.

This highly influential role requires exceptional legal, governance and communication expertise, along with a deep respect for and understanding of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

You can expect to:

  • Advise the Board on governance, statutory obligations, conflicts of interest, and corporate compliance.

  • Coordinate board and committee meetings, agendas, reports, and director inductions.
  • Update & maintain board management software, member elections, and corporate records.
  • Ensure compliance with ASIC, ACNC, ATO, and other regulatory obligations.
  • Support CEO and Board performance reviews, facilitating best-practice governance.

This is a unique opportunity to gain exposure to operational matters managed by the executive office, whilst assuring the highest standards of integrity, confidentiality, and professional conduct on behalf of the ALS.

About you

You are a highly professional and motivated individual with a strong understanding of corporate governance, compliance, and company secretarial practices. You should be able to demonstrate the following expertise:

  • Demonstrated experience in corporate governance, company secretarial, or compliance roles, ideally within regulated or not-for-profit organisations.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and ACNC requirements.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in record-keeping, minute-taking, and reporting.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with Boards, executives, and stakeholders.
  • High levels of integrity, discretion, and professionalism in handling confidential matters.
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach and the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.

As a proud, community-controlled organisation we actively encourage Firsts Nations People to apply.

Please note that due to the criticality of this role to our organisation, we will move at pace through our recruitment process. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply ASAP. The role will close when an offer is accepted by a suitable candidate.

At the ALS, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of safe recruitment practices. Therefore, it is essential that candidates either possess or can obtain a current and valid Working with Children (NSW) or Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) check.

We are focused on providing equal opportunities to all candidates. If you identify as a person with a disability and need any adjustments or support with your application, please let us know by emailing
