Primary objective

Provide executive level leadership and management in relation to the Northern Territory Government reforms for secondary education

pathways for remote and very remote students in the Northern Territory (NT). Lead the implementation of the services, strategies, and

policies of the Transition Support Unit (TSU) to support remote Indigenous students with educational options and transition to secondary

school pathways.

Context statement

Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) provides evidence-based differentiated services and support to preschools and schools to maximise

outcomes for Territory children and young people. Our services encompass quality teaching and learning, national and systemic

assessment, transition to boarding school support and policy coordination. TLS also plays a strategic role in implementing government

priorities, offering expert advice to the Education Minister and the department's senior executives. We enhance our work by actively

engaging with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure best outcomes for all of our clients.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide high level strategic and policy advice and reports to the Chief Executive, program areas, Australian Government and education

sectors in the implementation of boarding school transition, pathways and well-being for remote Indigenous secondary students.

2. Lead the development of collaborative partnerships and strategic alliances with peak education bodies, Indigenous organisations and

education sectors across Australia to provide boarding arrangements to remote Indigenous students in the NT, including scholarship

opportunities.

  1. Manage the TSU, including partnership service delivery arrangements with Australian Government in the development and operation

of transition arrangements for primary and secondary remote Indigenous students, and arrangements with organisiations offering short

term residential experiences and student leadership programs.

  1. Drive sustainable and efficient management structures and reporting frameworks that support planning, development, implementation

and evaluation of programs to achieve strategic outcomes.

  1. Undertake complex problem solving with school councils, school principals, boarding providers and remote communities to

continuously improve positive education outcomes for remote Indigenous students.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstratead high level experience in remote education and demonstrated improvement in educational outcomes for Indigenous

students.

2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in secondary education context, particularly dealing with the complexities of students

transitioning to secondary schooling from remote and very remote communities.

3. Knowledge of national and Territory policies relating to remote school contexts that inform the implementation of the strategies in

facilitation of boarding school transition.

4. Demonstrated high level knowledge and practical application of contemporary leadership and management techniques in relation to

the a geographically diverse business unit.

  1. A thorough and contemporary knowledge of the issues associated with and affecting life skills, well-being and transition processes,

and an understanding of how these issues might impact in differing Indigenous cultural contexts.

6. Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous culture and an understanding of cross-cultural issues across the Northern Territory.

Desirable

1. Degree in Education or other relevant tertiary qualification

This position requires travel remotely by 4WD and in light aircraft and staying overnight in remote communities.
