Primary objective

Lead and provide high-level direction, oversight and coordination to the Mining Assessment and Compliance Branch

undertaking assessment, monitoring, and review of mining activities, including exploration, extractives and mines, in

accordance with the Environment Protection Act 2019.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide leadership to the Mining Assessment and Compliance (MAC) Branch to ensure effective coordination and

prioritisation of assessment and compliance activities for mining projects, including assessments of statutory documents

and field based inspections, audits and environmental monitoring.

  1. Ensure consistency across the activities of the Branch, including in the development and application of policies and

guidelines for the assessment of environmental (mining) licence applications, environmental monitoring reports, mining

security assessments, and compliance and enforcement activities.

  1. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and good working relationships with peers, clients and other stakeholders.
  2. Project manage matters relating to major mining operations and identify solutions to challenging regulatory situations,

including providing recommendations for effective systems support or enforcement action.

  1. Prepare high level written correspondence, including Ministerial and Cabinet documents, and submissions on a range of

complex matters, which are often required within tight timeframes.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Tertiary qualifications in a field relevant to the mining industry (e.g. environmental management, science or engineering).

2. Sound knowledge of legislative, regulatory and corporate governance frameworks and systems to strategically guide

contemporary regulation of the mining industry.

3. High level of interpersonal and communication skills, including negotiation, written communication, conflict-resolution

and problem-solving abilities.

4. Demonstrated strong project management skills, with high level strategic, conceptual, analytical, and collaborative

capability.

  1. Experience in the application of risk assessments and knowledge of audit and investigations principles.

  2. Demonstrated leadership skills that foster a constructive workplace culture, inspire and motivate a sense of purpose and

enable staff to deliver client focussed services and achieve results in high pressure work environments.

  1. Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships in the work environment, including with industry

stakeholders.

Desirable

1. Commercial acumen with demonstrated understanding of the key issues impacting the mining industry.

  1. Experience in undertaking regulatory compliance and enforcement activities.
