About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Props and Staging Manager to join our Production & Facilities team.

Responsible for the effective utilisation of set constructions, props and staging supplies, facilities, and staff services to student productions, training, and other production related activities. Provide these services to 'outside hirers' where required. Provide instruction on all aspects of props and staging as appropriate.

Key Accountabilities

  • Planning Management: Manage the planning process of the set construction, props and staging facilities and staff to ensure maximum support for the AFTRS' course, production and other relevant activities.
  • Set Management: Manage set constructions, props buying and related activities including estimation of materials and labour costs, for both studio and on location activities.
  • Production Management: Manage and schedule props and staging workflow, designate staff duties, rosters, and allocation of priorities. Ensure that all relevant safety and best practice process and protocols are adhered to.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Manage the equipment maintenance schedule ensuing effective maintenance of props and staging equipment. Work with the Head of Production Operations to manage the Repairs and Maintenance budget.
  • Activity Oversight: Manage and oversee relevant day-to-day student, staff and volunteer activities to ensure all safety practices protocols and Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) are followed.
  • Advise: Provide advice to staff and hands-on instruction to students in the practical skills, techniques and industry protocols associated with props and staging.
  • Studio Booking Supervision: Work with the Studio Supervisor to monitor the AFTRS studio bookings and maximise facility usage.
  • Safety Management: Manage and oversee the safety of, workshop, storage areas and work with the Studio Supervisor on studio safety. Ensure maximum care, safety and security of props and staging equipment, working conditions and facilities, including scenery runway, props storage and props and staging equipment in studio areas. Maintain and updated SWMS and safety procedure documentation as required.
  • Database Management: Maintain up-to-date database information on freelance props and staging staff, equipment, and workshop schedule.
  • Reporting: Provide written records, SWMS and incident reports as required.
  • Staff Management: Manage and develop Props and Staging staff. Manage external crew ensuring they have relevant experience and appropriate onboarding.
  • Budgeting: Assist in the preparation of annual budgets for the Props and Staging Section and manage and maintain effective control of the budget allocation and its expenditure. Contribute to the development and implementation of the AFTRS' Capital Expenditure Plan.
  • Industry Aligned Practices: Maintain high professional standards and craftsmanship in the delivery of props and staging services.
  • Additional Staff/Student Support: Provide support and mentoring in specialist, hands-on, craft-based skills as required.
  • Safe Work Environments: Create and maintain culturally and psychologically safe learning and working environments.
  • Other Duties: There may be a requirement to undertake tasks outside the scope of the responsibilities listed to support the organisation. AFTRS will engage in a conversation should these tasks arise.

About you – You Have:

  1. Design Experience: Extensive knowledge of the end-to-end Production Design process and experience in managing props and staging requirements for both film and television production.
  2. WHS Experience: Knowledge of, and experience with, industry safety requirements including workplace health & safety legislation and regulations.
  3. Management Administration Experience: Experience in the efficient allocation of human, technical and financial resources to support productions.
  4. Supervision Experience: Supervisory experience related to film and television industries.
  5. Education Experience: Experience in educational settings and or mentoring early career practitioners.
  6. Communication Skills: Sound communication skills including the ability to negotiate. Ability to communicate with students and volunteers.
  7. Organisational Skills: Excellent organisational skills to manage a high work volume in time-sensitive environments.
  8. Budget Experience: Knowledge of, and experience in, developing and monitoring budgets. Experience in estimating costs relating to props and staging requirements.
  9. Safe Work Environments: Experience in fostering culturally and psychologically safe work environments.
