Product Design Engineer

Transglaze Pty Ltd is a leading Australian designer and manufacturer of window and glazing systems for public transport vehicles, including buses, trains, trams, and marine transport. Our company in Dandenong South VIC is seeking a full-time Product Design Engineer to join our Design team.

The Product Design Engineer is responsible for the conceptual design, development, and engineering of glazing systems and components used in public transport vehicles. The role involves designing innovative and practical solutions, conducting reverse engineering, and supporting continuous product improvement to meet client and regulatory requirements.

The base salary offered is $80,000 - $90,000 per annum plus superannuation.

Key Duties and Responsibilities include:

Design and Product Development

· Research, design, and develop custom glazing systems and window assemblies for buses, trains, trams, and marine transport vehicles.

· Prepare engineering drawings, technical specifications, and 3D CAD models using AutoDesk Inventor and AutoCAD.

· Apply reverse engineering techniques to analyse existing products and develop equivalent or improved designs that meet the same dimensional and performance standards.

· Design driver safety and security features, including driver protection screens and glazing reinforcement systems.

Engineering Analysis and Testing

· Conduct design reviews, fit-for-purpose assessments, and stress or load calculations as required.

· Evaluate and select appropriate materials and components to ensure performance, cost-efficiency, and compliance with Australian Standards.

· Undertake prototype testing and refinement in collaboration with production and quality assurance teams.

Project and Technical Support

· Liaise with production and installation teams to ensure designs are practical and can be efficiently produced and assembled.

· Assist design manager in developing technical documentation and design input for client proposals and tenders.

· Provide ongoing engineering support for product modifications and fault resolution.

Design Data and Quality Management

· Maintain and utilise Transglaze's nearly 20-year design database to ensure consistency, version control, and traceability.

· Manage documentation, design revisions, and configuration records in line with company quality procedures.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

· Collaborate closely with the production team to ensure all manufacturing and delivery activities align with design specifications and project timelines.

· Engage with suppliers and clients to clarify technical specifications and resolve design-related issues.

Skills and Experience expected include:

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Product Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, or a related discipline.
• At least one year of experience in a design engineering or product development role, preferably within manufacturing, automotive, transport, or glazing sectors.
• Demonstrated experience in AutoDesk Inventor and AutoCAD, or equivalent.
• Sound understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and design-for-manufacture principles.
• Experience with reverse engineering methods and redevelopment of legacy or comparative products.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
