Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia Mara Consulting Full time $60,000 - $90,000 per year

What makes a great engagement professional?
At Mara, it's someone who listens with empathy, thinks strategically, communicates clearly, and shows up with integrity—especially when things get complex. They're thoughtful, curious, and know how to turn complexity into clarity—without forgetting the people at the heart of it all. And yes, they have a of LEGO too.

About us: Big impact, small team

At Mara Consulting, we work on the big stuff—energy, infrastructure, environment, water, resources, transport, education, and aged care projects that help shape communities. But we care just as much about the small stuff—like genuine conversations, thoughtful strategy, and making every engagement count.

We are committed to strengthening Aboriginal participation in the projects we deliver—and that starts with our own team. That's why this position is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants.

About the role

We're looking for a passionate communicator to join our Newcastle team as an Engagement Consultant (Identified). You'll support the delivery of stakeholder engagement and communication activities for high-impact projects, especially those requiring statutory consultation and sensitive engagement.

You'll be part of a supportive, experienced team working across complex infrastructure and energy projects, with a strong focus on cultural safety, collaboration, and clear communication.

Location: Newcastle (hybrid WFH and office model)
Type: Full-time or part-time
Travel: Some regional travel involved—no two weeks will feel the same

What you'll be doing

  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with stakeholders, community members

  • Support the design and delivery of community consultation activities

  • Help prepare clear, engaging communication materials—newsletters, factsheets, web content

  • Attend and support community meetings, pop-ups, and public exhibition events

  • Collaborate with a team that values integrity, impact and relationships.

What you'll bring

This is a great role for someone early in their career—or someone with experience looking for a new challenge. We'll shape the role to match your strengths and career goals.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Confidence in building trust with a range of people and perspectives

  • Understanding of or connection to Aboriginal communities and culture

  • A passion for honest, respectful community engagement

  • Flexibility and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

What you'll need

  • A tertiary qualification in communications, engagement, social sciences, or a related field—or equivalent experience

  • A genuine interest in sectors like energy, environment, resources, construction, or community services

  • A can-do attitude, a collaborative mindset and a drive to make a difference.

Perks and benefits:

  • A culturally safe and inclusive workplace

  • Flexible working options – including WFH and office-based work (3 days a week in the office)

  • Ongoing mentoring and professional development

  • Opportunities to work on projects that create real, lasting impact.
