We are seeking a passionate Counsellor and Team Leader who are committed to providing high-quality support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families across Cape York.

Position Purpose:
The primary responsibility of the Counsellor and Team Leader is to provide culturally appropriate and safe counselling, and therapeutic activities to children, young people and families who are affected by domestic and family violence.
The Counsellor works to empower children and young people through age-appropriate education and information, to help them understand their fears, emotions, and behaviours. These roles require the use of different modes of therapy such as play, to help make meaning of their experiences, and develop age-appropriate tools to support their recovery and healing. This position also provides a high level of social and emotional wellbeing support to the children, young people, and their families in community, and ensures strong stakeholder relationships are maintained to support the holistic needs of the family.
In addition, the Team Leader will be responsible for managing the program. Including reporting, stakeholder engagement, and overseeing the supervision and mentoring of Counsellors to foster a supportive and collaborative environment. They also manage the team's travel schedule to ensure continued program delivery across Cairns and Cape York communities.
The Opportunity:
• Both positions are full-time, Cairns based with regular fortnightly travel to remote communities across Cape York and Cairns region.
• Provide trauma-informed, client-centred, and culturally safe services in a timely manner, and in line with ethical and accountable practices.
• Provide holistic support, ensuring families feel supported and empowered with options to make informed decisions that enhance their safety and wellbeing.
• Implement intervention strategies, ensuring timely and effective responses to immediate safety concerns.
About You:
• Ability to maintain a high level of privacy, confidentiality, and adherence to organisational policies and procedures.
• Strong time management skills (punctuality, meeting deadlines, and prioritising tasks).
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• An understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, particularly domestic and family violence.
• Proficient in delivering a range of counselling and therapeutic interventions.
• Ability to provide advocacy and professional advice, counselling, and referrals for parents/guardians, with a specific focus on the needs of their children and young people.
• Ability to create and maintain strong and supportive relationships with stakeholders.
• Relevant qualifications in Counselling, Social Work, Social Sciences, or related fields, or currently working towards them,
• Team Leader role: Holds relevant qualifications and demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership and management.
