Role Overview
The Policy Officer will join the Strategic Policy and Legislative Services team to deliver high-level policy advice, research, and analysis. This role is responsible for drafting briefings, Cabinet documentation, policies, and plain-English guidance materials, while also leading consultation processes with industry, community stakeholders, and government bodies. It's an opportunity to influence meaningful policy outcomes in workplace safety and industrial relations.
About the Person
We are seeking a motivated professional with strong analytical skills, excellent writing ability, and the capability to translate complex legislation into clear, accessible information. You'll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, balancing competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and quality. You will be collaborative, resilient, and confident in engaging with a broad range of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare high-level briefings, Cabinet documents, Parliamentary notes, and correspondence.
- Undertake research and provide expert policy advice on workplace safety and industrial relations issues.
- Translate technical and legislative information into plain-English materials and guidance.
- Lead consultation with stakeholders including industry groups, unions, government agencies, and advisory committees.
- Contribute to legislative development and parliamentary processes.
- Support organisational functions including complaints management, reviews, and internal initiatives.
- Promote a culture of professionalism, inclusion, and safe work practices.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- Understanding of workplace safety and industrial relations legislation, or the ability to acquire this knowledge.
- Strong research, advisory writing, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience developing and implementing policy in a consultative framework.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality results under pressure.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
- Awareness of relevant legislation, codes, and public sector principles including diversity and inclusion.
- (Desirable) Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field and knowledge of parliamentary and Cabinet processes.
