The Department of Defence is the Federal Government's largest landholder, managing over 3 million hectares across the country. Within the Security and Estate Group, Estate Planning plays a critical role—providing the strategic planning framework and guidance for more than 70 major bases, 70 training ranges, and over 800 leased and owned properties.This is the Defence Estate.

Are you someone who:

  • Thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment?
  • Enjoys engaging with policy makers and technical experts to influence high-level strategic decisions?

  • Loves strategic thinking and wants to contribute to the Defence of Australia?

If so, Estate Planning could be your next career move.

In this role, you will contribute to estate analysis and planning outcomes within an integrated workforce, gaining valuable exposure to planning legislation and practices across Australia. You will have opportunities to make an impact at the local (base), regional, and national levels while collaborating across Defence and Government on planning initiatives that shape the future of the estate.

We are looking for someone who is energised by solving complex problems, thrives in collaboration, and is comfortable working in a fast-moving, sometimes ambiguous environment

About our Team

The Security and Estate Group (SEG) is responsible for developing and sustaining the Defence estate, and serves as the consolidated security and service delivery organisation for Defence. Within SEG, the Estate Planning team plays a critical role in shaping the future of Defence infrastructure and land use.

Our Work Includes:

  • Developing policy for managing the Defence estate;
  • Leading engagement with local governments and external stakeholders;
  • Managing land use matters such as urban encroachment and assessing development applications;
  • Acting as the delegated departmental planning approval authority for infrastructure projects, facility upgrades, and land divestments;
  • Conducting strategic assessments for estate acquisitions, disposals, and leases;
  • Leading resilience and critical infrastructure initiatives across Defence; and
  • Collaborating with other SEG branches, Defence groups and services, and other government agencies to deliver integrated outcomes.

While the majority of our team is based in Canberra, we are a geographically dispersed workforce with staff located in Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Brisbane, and regional New South Wales. This national footprint enables us to deliver regionally informed and strategically aligned estate planning outcomes.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Proven ability to deliver strategic studies and planning outcomes.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate with influence across internal and external networks.
  • Experience preparing high-quality advice, briefs, and reports for senior leaders.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to prioritise competing demands in a complex environment.
  • A quick learner with a proactive mindset and a desire to grow.
  • A positive, inclusive team player who can work effectively in a geographically dispersed and diverse organisation.
