About the Opportunity

Due to growth and increased funding, we are looking for full-time and part-time (0.8 FTE) Domestic Violence Workers, based in Cairns, QLD.

Reporting to the Senior Practitioner, you'll support victim-survivors through a combination of crisis intervention, safety planning, court support, and ongoing counselling. You'll work both in-office and onsite at Queensland Police Service (QPS) stations, helping vulnerable individuals access timely, trauma-informed care.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing crisis intervention including intake and assessment
  • Offering crisis counselling and ongoing DV counselling
  • Assisting at Cairns Domestic Violence Court with information and referral
  • Working closely with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) on improving the safety of victim-survivors
  • Engaging in group work and community education
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records of client work

Your work will be critical in ensuring that victim-survivors feel safe, empowered, and supported through every stage of their journey.

About You

To qualify, you will need tertiary qualifications in behavioural or social sciences. While experience is preferred (especially for Level 5 SCHADS candidates), we also welcome applications from new graduates, as training and upskilling can be provided for the right candidates.

The following skills and background will also be highly valued:

  • Crisis intervention and case management
  • Counselling and advocacy
  • Community engagement experience
  • Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics
  • Experience working in culturally diverse settings

As our ideal candidate, you will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Your ability to apply an intersectional lens and understand the gendered nature of violence will be critical to your success in this role.
