RoleThank you for your interest in this exciting new Leading Teacher position at Balwyn High School: Director of AI: Innovation in Education. We are seeking a high performing educational leader who can work collaboratively and effectively to make a positive and significant contribution to the academic outcomes and wellbeing of our students and community members.
The Director of AI: Innovation in Education will work closely with the Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning), the Director of Pedagogy, the Learning Analytics Learning Specialist, the Business Manager and the Learning Systems Manager.
The successful candidate for this position will be expected to be an active and dynamic member of the school¿s Leadership Team. As an educational leader they will be committed to the leadership and management of change and the promotion of Balwyn High School as `the school of choice¿. They will have specific portfolio duties and will be actively involved in whole school leadership and exemplify the professional standards expected of teachers. As a member of the Leadership Team the educational leader will be committed to their own professional learning and creating and sustaining a performance and development culture.
A five-period time allowance is provided for this position. [Please note: we operate on a timetable of four 74 minute lessons per day].
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities
Frameworks and Policy
- Develop and maintain school-based frameworks for the ethical and effective use of AI by students and staff.
- Contextualise Department of Education guidelines and ensure alignment with school values, policies, and strategic priorities.
- Establish protocols for AI use in assessment, ensuring integrity, fairness, and compliance with academic honesty expectations.
- Monitor national and international developments in AI in education to ensure the school remains at the forefront of best practice.
Professional Learning and Teacher Support
- Design and deliver professional learning for teachers on:
- Supporting students to ethically and responsibly use AI for learning and assessment.
- Using AI tools to reduce teacher workload (lesson preparation, assessment feedback, reporting, administration).
- Integrating AI into subject-specific pedagogical practice.
- Provide just-in-time support and resources (guides, exemplars, case studies) for staff at different stages of AI adoption.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Pedagogy to embed AI strategies into professional learning team (PLT) work.
Student Learning and Digital Citizenship
- Develop resources and workshops to guide students in ethical and effective AI use for research, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.
- Promote student voice in shaping school approaches to AI, including feedback on classroom applications and assessment practices.
- Build capacity among staff to model and teach AI literacy and digital citizenship skills.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Collaborate with:
- Learning Systems Manager to align AI tools with school infrastructure.
- Learning Specialist for Learning Analytics to link AI use with data-informed teaching
- Director of Pedagogy to embed AI into instructional design and PLT programs.
- Lead, in collaboration with the above leaders, a cross-school working group to trial and evaluate emerging AI technologies before broader rollout.
- Represent the school, as part of a team with the above leaders, in external networks and professional associations on AI in education.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Identify and pilot AI tools that enhance teaching, assessment, administration, and student engagement.
- Evaluate impact of AI initiatives on teacher workload, student outcomes, and equity of access.
- Establish feedback loops to ensure ongoing refinement of AI practices.
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
