Part Time Full Stack Developer
We're looking for a new software developer to join our small 2-person developer team. You'll likely be working in React Native to start with, then branching out to our backend in Ruby on Rails as well as React and Nextjs. While experience in any of the aforementioned technologies is a nice to have, it is NOT a requirement.
We'd love to see a couple of years hands on programming experience, but if you can show your expertise in other ways that's no problem. As mentioned, we're a small team so if working varied frontend and backend problems and taking on responsibility appeals, you might be a great fit.
This role can be part time or full time. It will be a minimum of 20 hours / week. It will have a probation period and will commence as a 1 year contract with a view to becoming permanent.
Skills & Competencies:
The following skills and competencies are required to be successful in this role.
- Good communicator, both verbally and in the written form.
- Detail Oriented
Must be able to understand a brief, ask any questions needed to gain clarity on the desired result, and ensure all components of the brief are met within the timeframe required. - Productive
Given the size of the team, its essential the developer can complete tasks at a reasonable pace. Developers should be mindful of the time they are spending on aspects of a project and be able to make judgement calls trading off scalability/optimality with development time. - Quality of Result
The developer must be able to self-test code written and be able to reliably ship products without any show stopping bugs. It is the responsibility of the developer to ensure the code they write performs reliably. External Quality Assurance processes should not be solely relied upon. - Able to Learn
Over a reasonable time, the developer should be able to increase their proficiency and speed in the technologies Impact Apps uses. The developer needs to be able to learn independently. - Ask Questions
Especially in the first few months in the role, the developer should regularly be checking that they are 'on the right track' with what they are working on. It is the responsibility of the developer to reach out for help when they feel stuck or unsure, not to wait for someone senior to follow up. - Accept Decisions of Lead Developer
The developer must be able to accept the final decision of the Lead Developer even if the final decision is not what they were advocating for. At times, decisions may be made based on time constraints and expected demand/use of the code/feature which in a vacuum, may not be the 'optimal' and 'most saleable' approach. Ultimately, technical decisions are the responsibility of the lead developer. - Able to Discuss
Conversely, it is expected the developer will voice concerns, efficiency suggestions and ideas. Broadly, the developer should cultivate an attitude of 'strong opinions held weakly'. In other words, be able to confidently articulate and defend ideas/views but be able to change their mind as soon as differing evidence comes to light. - Technical Skills
Possess, or quickly learn, the required technical skills for the role.
