Operations Systems Engineer

About the role
We're looking for a high-performing Operations Systems Engineer to take ownership of the systems, workflows, and automation that underpin our ETF operations.
This is not a support role; it's a hands-on delivery position for someone who loves solving operational challenges with technology, leading process improvement projects, and collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You'll dive deep into our ETF operations, learn how the team works end-to-end, and apply your engineering skills to optimise, automate, and scale critical processes that keep our business running smoothly.
You'll be part of the Digital Transformation team, working closely with Investment Operations, Portfolio Management, and Technology to design and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions that align with Betashares' broader strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of workflow automations, internal tools, and process optimisations across ETF operations.
- Work directly with operations stakeholders to deeply understand their challenges, then translate these into technical solutions that drive measurable impact.
- Use innovative approaches, including automation, workflow orchestration, and AI-powered solutions, to solve operational problems and uplift efficiency.
- Take full ownership of projects from scoping through to delivery, including code quality, testing, documentation, and deployment.
- Identify and prioritise automation opportunities to reduce manual effort and operational risk.
- Integrate data sources and APIs from custodians, administrators, and third-party providers.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure new tools and systems meet security, reliability, and scalability standards.
- Proactively monitor existing automation and data workflows, ensuring performance, reliability, and continuous improvement.
- Communicate progress clearly with stakeholders, managing expectations and influencing decisions with confidence.
About You
- 3–5 years' experience in a process automation, operations engineering, or data engineering role (financial services exposure highly regarded).
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, able to explain complex systems in plain English and drive alignment across teams.
- Confident working autonomously, you don't rely on senior engineers for reviews or direction; you take ownership and deliver.
- Proficient in Python and SQL, with demonstrated experience in data-driven automation and workflow optimisation.
- Exposure to AWS, CI/CD, Docker, and (or similar orchestration frameworks).
- Curious, analytical, and proactive in identifying and implementing improvements.
- Experience applying AI-powered or algorithmic approaches to automate tasks, improve workflows, or support decision-making (or a strong interest in learning).
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
