About the role
This role will be responsible for trade surveillance across the 26 Degrees business, servicing clients from our various jurisdictions. The role requires high energy and the ability to learn new skills in a dynamic environment. You will be reporting directly to the Head of Market Surveillance and working within the Legal and Compliance team. Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided to get you exposure in all areas of Market Surveillance functions.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Surveillance Alerts Review - Conduct comprehensive investigations of at-trade and post-trade alerts across multiple surveillance platforms to identify and assess potential instances of market abuse within equities and futures markets.
- Surveillance Monitoring - Perform daily deep dive analysis on client trading patterns and risk positions outside of the automated surveillance system to detect potential insider trading or market manipulation.
- Reporting - Escalate matters of concern in accordance with internal governance protocols. Prepare and deliver thorough investigation reports and submit Suspicious Matter Reports (SMRs) to AUSTRAC where required.
- Vendor Management - Liaise with our external trade surveillance system provider for any system issues and support ongoing platform improvements.
- Process Documentation – Maintain detailed records of surveillance activities, analytical findings and decision rationales to support audit readiness and demonstrate regulatory compliance.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration - Work with different teams e.g. Legal & Compliance, Trading, Risk and Sales to be part of the broader risk management for the whole business.
- Strategic & Project Support - Assist the Head of Market Surveillance in enhancing surveillance frameworks and risk controls through parameter optimization, market and news intelligence, due diligence on new prospects, and the preparation of business insights and presentations for senior management.
About you
- Hold a bachelor's degree in finance, business, commerce or similar.
- Interested in acquiring relevant industry accreditations or currently in the process of completion. (e.g. CFA, FRM, CA)
- 1 – 2 years of working experience within Financial Services, ideally with exposure to market surveillance, trading, or risk management functions. Prior work in a brokerage, trading desk, or market operator environment is preferred.
- Bring a solid understanding of financial markets and market abuse practices, particularly in equities, with a sound awareness of broader market conditions and regulatory obligations.
- Strong analytical skills with great level of attention to detail – being able to distill complex information and form well-reasoned conclusions.
- Excellent prioritisation and organisational skills – level of autonomy with supervision will be given for you to independently manage your own deadlines.
- Strong technical proficiency, with intermediate Excel skills essential; experience with IRESS, Bloomberg, Confluence, Python and/or SQL is highly regarded.
- Effective communicator – capable of presenting analyses and insights clearly and confidently to both internal and external stakeholders.
