The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Senior Assessor (Prioritised) to provide a critical role within Victims of Crime Financial Assist Scheme

About the Business Unit

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to major new initiative for victims of crime. The FAS is a landmark reform replaced the judicially based Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal with an administrative scheme that prioritises the needs of victims and supports their recovery from violent crime.

The FAS is highly anticipated by victims and stakeholders and represents a major leap forward in the Victorian Government's response to victims of crime. Established under the Victims of Crime (Financial Assistance Scheme) Act 2022 the FAS will provide financial assistance through a simple and easy to navigate process that is fair, sensitive, and responsive to victims' needs. It will acknowledge harm done and be trauma informed, with a priority focus on being inclusive and culturally safe.

About the Role

This Senior Assessor Role provides a unique opportunity to shape decision quality and integrity within the Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS). You will primarily be responsible for reviewing complex applications, leading a team of assessors with a focus on enhancing cultural safety, and driving continuous business improvement processes to support consistent, fair and trauma informed outcomes.

You will play a key role in supporting the capability of assessors by monitoring decision quality, identifying systemic issues, and contributing to the refinement of policies, guidance materials and workflows.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Leading a team of FAS assessors, supporting, and guiding them to deliver quality decision making in a timely and trauma informed way
  • Enhancing Aboriginal Cultural Safety and victim-centred practice as core components within the FAS and service delivery
  • Assessing and determining complex applications where required, applying legislation, policy, and procedural guidelines
  • Contributing to quality assurance activities, including analysis of decision-making trends and consistency checks
  • Preparing high quality written decisions, reports and recommendations

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Strong leadership and staff development experience
  • Experience in building, maintaining, and fostering partnerships between the department, local Aboriginal community organisations and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations
  • Demonstrated expertise in complex administrative decision making
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to draft well-reasoned decision notices for complex applications, supported by comprehensive statement of reasons
  • Experience in quality assurance, providing constructive feedback in review processes or continuous improvement in a decision-making environment
  • Sound understanding of the impact of violent crime with a commitment to enhance Aboriginal cultural safety and victim-centred practices

Qualifications

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in fields related to community and social services, social policy, social work, law, or public administration is essential.
