The Opportunity

The Technical Procurement Officer is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and procuring technically specified materials, engineered components, and services in support of manufacturing and engineering operations. This role requires a deep understanding of technical drawings, specifications, and production requirements to ensure the right materials are sourced to meet quality, cost, and delivery expectations. The Technical Procurement Officer works closely with engineering, quality, production, and suppliers to align procurement activities with project and operational needs.

Technical Sourcing and Procurement

  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and technical specifications to procure required components and materials.
  • Ensure delivery of purchased components meets production schedule and achieves agreed customer dispatch dates.
  • Identify and engage suppliers capable of meeting complex technical and quality requirements.
  • Issue RFQs/RFPs, evaluate supplier proposals, and manage negotiations to secure competitive pricing and terms.
  • Work to identify new equipment or innovations and present business case for benefits to the business.
  • Manage purchasing administrators supporting the purchase process.

Supplier Management

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential suppliers, including those for custom, precision-engineered, or high-specification parts.
  • Evaluate supplier performance in terms of quality, delivery, and cost; drive continuous improvement and corrective actions where necessary.
  • Work with suppliers to resolve technical queries, non-conformances, and deviations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Liaise with engineering, design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure procurement aligns with technical and operational requirements.
  • Participate in design and cost reviews to ensure components are procured efficiently and with cost/lead-time optimisation in mind.
  • When required work directly with customers to support engineering and sales teams.

Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure procurement activities comply with internal policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate procurement records, supplier documentation, and certification records (e.g., material certificates, inspection reports).
  • Support audits and traceability efforts.

Cost and Risk Management

  • Monitor market trends, raw material prices, and lead times to anticipate risks and opportunities.
  • Implement risk mitigation strategies, including dual sourcing and inventory planning where appropriate.
  • Support make-versus-buy analysis and cost-reduction initiatives.
