**The Role**
As the Discipline Leader Power and Energy Electrical Systems, you will nurture, lead and be responsible for a multidisciplinary team, comprising APS staff, embedded contractors and collaborative academic partners.

Your role will be to undertake and deliver innovative research outcomes and in-service support to the ADF, primarily to Naval platforms including surface ships, submarines and underwater autonomous vehicles.

The Discipline Leader is responsible for the Discipline’s leadership and management. Specifically, the Discipline Leader will:

- Lead the Discipline’s work program to support the delivery of innovative research and development of new/evolved capability for Defence, including conventional and nuclear powered submarines and underwater autonomous vehicles.
- Develop research programs that align with Defence and DSTG Priorities as outlined in the Defence Strategic Review and guide the achievement of outcomes to meet their needs
- Work with the Power and Energy Systems Group Leader to provide the vision, guidance, direction, coordination and collaboration necessary to ensure the capability of the Discipline can be harnessed for the delivery of agreed outputs to Defence.
- Be responsible for the development and effective supervision of the people in the Discipline and promoting a collaborative environment to ensure that all staff contribute effectively to the output of the Discipline.
- Contribute to the engagement with, and management of, effective relationships with partners and stakeholders across Defence, industry and academia.

**About our Team**
The Power and Energy Systems Group undertakes at scale experimentation, research and engineering support to the whole of Defence, with current emphasis on the Maritime Domain, in particular the group supports the following areas
- Mechanical Systems - research, modelling and engineering support for power generation, performance
- and reliability, energy reduction and waste energy recovery technologies.
- Electrical Systems - development and exploitation of electrical power and energy system models (main propulsion motors, power electronics and hardware power in the loop) and battery performance, integration and optimization.
- Electro-Chemical Energy Storage
- materials development, performance modelling and prognosis and safety assessment of alternative battery systems
- Electric motor performance modelling and control, including power electronics, motor drive systems.
- Digital Engineering of power systems, including power hardware in the loop, embedded systems and real-time simulation platforms.
- Power hardware, including power distribution, power system architecture and electrical protection schemes.
- Energy storage and distribution systems, including batteries and energy management techniques.

You will ideally have a PhD in Electrical Engineering (or similar post graduate qualifications and/or relevant experience) and significant leadership/managerial experience.

You will have a demonstrated ability to work effectively across organisational boundaries and are passionate about creating opportunities for staff to develop professionally.

You will have excellent report writing/reviewing and interpersonal skills and can articulate a compelling Science and Technology (S&T) vision for your team and senior management. You will deliver a capability edge to the Defence through your ability to build and support diverse teams, develop S&T work packages and respond to strategic drivers in Defence.
